The Seduction of the Seventies

After years of carefully restrained interiors, something is beginning to change.

Rooms are becoming warmer. Colour is regaining depth. Furniture is becoming more expressive. Materials are once again allowed to make their presence felt.

In our latest Journal, Christiane Lange reflects on what the seventies can teach contemporary residential design — not as nostalgia, but as a reminder that interiors can be calm, elegant and still have a point of view.

A quiet room, with one decisive gesture.

At Flame Tree Ridge Residence, a restrained palette gives way to a wall of richly veined red stone — bringing depth, warmth and character into the living space without overwhelming it.

Around it, furniture, art and light are layered rather than matched, allowing the room to feel collected rather than composed all at once.

One room, seen through another.

At Flame Tree Ridge, the living space opens towards the kitchen through layers of stone, timber, light and furniture — each element distinct, but designed to read as one continuous interior.

Sculptural lighting and carefully selected pieces add character without interrupting the calm of the architecture.

Designed for the room, not added to it.

At the centre of the dining space, a bespoke stone table designed by LANGE anchors the room — surrounded by pieces from Poliform and sculptural lighting by Bocci, BOMMA, Ingo Maurer and JMW Studio.

Each element has its own character, brought together through material, proportion and light.

Quiet, but never without character.

At Flame Tree Ridge Residence, the kitchen is shaped through warm walnut, Taj Mahal Quartzite, limestone and a restrained palette that lets light, proportion and material do the work.

Designed as part of the architecture of the home rather than as a separate object, it is intended to feel calm, tactile and lived in.

When good taste became boring.

For years, restraint felt like the answer. Pale oak, travertine, bouclé, warm whites — calm, beautiful, considered.

Then everything started to look the same.

This isn’t an argument against beige, minimalism or restraint. It’s about what happens when taste becomes a formula and personality disappears with it.

We think the most interesting homes now are becoming richer, moodier and more personal again — not louder for the sake of it, but more atmospheric, more individual, more alive.
Because the answer to boring beige isn’t maximalism.
It’s character.
