Three things most expensive rooms get wrong.

The first is colour. Cushions cannot save a beige room —
if colour is meant to work, it has to sit on the largest
surface in the room. That is the sofa, not the accessories.

The second is sound. Stone and glass reflect it, and most
villas here are built from both. Textiles are acoustics, not
decoration — one large upholstered piece audibly changes
how a room sounds.

The third is restraint. Empty space is not something missing.
It is the frame. Without it, the best piece in the room has
nowhere to work.

Every sofa in these photos is handmade in Gensingen,
Germany, and covered in a fabric you choose yourself —
which is rarer in luxury furniture in Dubai than it should be.

A pillow is the smallest decision in a room. Often it is the one that gives everything else away.

Bretz pillows are cut and sewn by hand in Gensingen — velvet against pattern, colour set against colour, never quite matching, always belonging together. They are how the house speaks in a lower voice: on a sofa that is already yours, on a bed, on a chair by the window.

Character rarely arrives as a grand gesture. Sometimes it is a single, considered thing.

Teratai is Balinese for water lily — a symbol of balance and inner calm. Everything about this piece follows that one idea.

Watch the seams. They never run straight. They branch through the upholstery like veins through a leaf, and that is what gives the sofa its volume: softly indented here, rounded over an edge there, smooth where you don’t expect it. The seat gets its plasticity from indentations set point by point, and the high back hides an integrated kidney support — so a sculpture this dramatic is still the seat you fall asleep on.

Underneath: a solid wooden frame, spring suspension, foams layered in different densities. Over 22 hours of handwork before one Teratai leaves the manufactory in Gensingen, Germany — where Bretz has been building by hand since 1895.

It’s a modular system. Armchair at 105 cm, corner sofa at 312 cm, and everything in between, in hundreds of fabrics. The room decides, not the catalogue.

She stands out. Then she snuggles up — first of all to herself.

Matilda is built from pentagonal elements. Turn them towards one
another and the seating stops being a row. It becomes an island.
A circle. A conversation that nobody has to sit in profile for.

The indentations are placed, not accidental. The pillows are
generous rather than tidy. The printed Paradise Velour creases —
deeply, visibly, by design. Matilda does not pretend to have
just been delivered.

Her covers come off. She changes her garment with the season and
invents herself again, without ever becoming another piece.

Piece of the Week:
Matilda never followed a trend. Ten years on, nothing else looks like her.
Every module is a pentagon. Not for the look — five sides turn the people sitting on them slightly toward each other, so you end up in a conversation instead of a row.

Piece of the Week — Ohlinda.

A sofa that refuses to be one thing. Hand-tufted mattress landscapes that seem to float. Back cushions that can each carry their own colour — because a character is never just one shade. Slender lily-shaped feet that lift the whole composition off the ground.
