Every Mediterranean restaurant is offered the same shortcut: blue, white, and a fishing net somewhere on the wall. None of it was used here.

The south arrives in the surfaces instead. Plaster sculpted overhead in slow curves, the way wind leaves sand. Brass the colour of late afternoon. Lemon trees that are actually growing, and majolica painted by hand.
The chain curtains do the rest: they move whenever anyone walks past, so the room never stands completely still.

A room can suggest the south without quoting it. That version is harder, and it is the one that lasts.

A hotel room is sold in daylight and judged after dark.

Same room, twelve hours apart. Nothing has moved - not a chair, not a curtain, not a single lamp shifted an inch. Only the light changed, and with it the materials: the panel above the bed turns from botanical drawing into deep velvet, and the onyx behind the bar stops being a wall and becomes a lamp.

This is why every room gets drawn twice. A surface picked from a sample board at noon will let you down at ten in the evening, and the evening is when people decide whether they want to come back.

Here the light passes through things instead of pointing at them.

Alabaster hung in tiers. A table base glowing under its own top. Brass shelving lit from behind the glass. Even the bar reads as a lamp rather than a counter.

It is a simple idea and an expensive one. Nobody sits looking into a light source, and every face in the room is lit from the side.

One colour was let in: terracotta. Everything else stays in timber and brass, so it never has to raise its voice.

S+S designed the spa for a hotel concept in Areni, Armenia.
In a cave near the village, w**e was made six thousand years ago.

The spa begins underground too.
Dark stone rooms.
Water lit only by candles.
A glass of red by the bath.

Then it rises.
A courtyard with a single tree.
A terrace open to the night over the gorge.

From the cave to the sky.

The horse appears in this hotel more often than you will notice on a first visit.

Cast in bronze on the axis of the lobby. Glimpsed again between fluted columns. And then, once you know to look, in everything a rider would recognise: a headboard buckled with brass straps, saddle stitching along the leather, a wall light hung from a loop and a carabiner.

Nobody announces the theme. The details just keep answering it.

A reference only really works once it moves from the sculpture into the hardware.

Every line in these rooms is straight. The light is the only thing allowed to curve.
Fluted bronze runs floor to ceiling in place of walls - the same panel carries the warmth of the entire floor, and the same brass loops reappear in every room at a different scale.

Herringbone underfoot, classical panelling across the far side, and overhead a shape that lines up with nothing.

One curve in a straight room reads as a decision. Five would read as decoration.

The same glass, twice, doing opposite things.

Above the bar it gathers into a cloud of cast plates, heavy and low. Above the tables it falls as a cascade of thin tubes, light and vertical. One material, two temperaments, and the room reads as two rooms without a single partition.

Underneath, everything runs soft and slow: burl tabletops with a grain nobody could repeat, boucle deep enough to disappear into, olive velvet, greenery along the marble island.

Dividing a room with walls is easy. The interesting part is doing it with light.

The boldest colour in this bar is the one you have to find.
Green marble along the counter, cream across the seating, and a single red stripe running through the upholstery where almost nobody looks for it.
The gold went overhead instead: leaf laid by hand over rolling ribs, lit from a line hidden along its own edge, so no chandelier was ever needed.
Put the loud thing where people discover it themselves. They like it more that way.
