Bukharay Art Collection
Brand Profile
From ancient roots to contemporary art; from one heritage to the world.
Bukharay Art Collection was established on September 17, 2022, by Kawther Bukharay and her family. What began as a personal passion for art and cultural heritage has grown into an independent and expanding brand working across art, design, fashion, jewelry, and handmade crafts.
The name “Bukharay” is rooted in the family’s connection to the historic city of Bukhara, Uzbekistan. However, the identity of the collection is not limited to one geography. Bukhara and Balkh are the roots of Bukharay—not its boundaries.
Bukharay believes that art is a universal language that transcends geographical borders. The collection therefore seeks inspiration from the history, art, clothing, traditions, and beauty of diverse cultures, presenting their stories through contemporary and handcrafted creations.
The Story of Bukharay
Kawther Bukharay began learning the art of bead weaving and bead embroidery during her childhood in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where she learned from her aunts. At the same time, she developed her skills in drawing and painting under the guidance of her father.
After returning to Afghanistan in 2017, she continued her artistic and literary journey in Balkh, developing her skills under the guidance of local artists and through different cultural and artistic environments.
Over time, her artistic experiences shaped the visual language of Bukharay—a language in which beads, textiles, colors, patterns, and design come together to create works that go beyond ordinary products.
Expanding Art Beyond a Single Technique
Bukharay does not seek to be known for only one art form or one type of product.
The collection aims to expand the possibilities of handmade art and connect it with contemporary design—from beadwork and jewelry to artistic garments, decorative pieces, wall art, and conceptual collections.
Each collection may draw inspiration from a different place, historical period, tradition, or aspect of contemporary life.
For this reason, Bukharay sees itself not simply as a producer, but as an evolving art collection—a creative space that brings different forms of art together and creates a connection between cultural heritage and contemporary design.
From Individual Art to Collective Creativity
As the collection has grown, collaboration with women and young female artists has become an important part of Bukharay’s journey.
So far, 75 women have successfully completed beadwork-related training programs, and the third round is currently underway.
However, the ultimate goal goes beyond training. Bukharay seeks to create a creative environment for production, collaboration, experimentation, innovation, and artistic development—a space where artists can transform their ideas into meaningful and marketable works.
Presence and Professional Growth
The works of Bukharay Art Collection have been presented at various events and exhibitions, including AWEC and UNICEF youth exhibitions, the International Exhibition in Kabul, the Afghanistan–Uzbekistan joint exhibition, as well as several local exhibitions in Balkh.
As part of its market development, the collection is also pursuing opportunities to showcase and offer its works through platforms such as Asil, AmazeBid, and Made by Afghan Women.
Looking ahead, Bukharay plans to expand its collaborations with women and young female artists, develop new collections, and launch its own dedicated store in the near future—a space for presenting products, introducing artists, and sharing diverse artistic and cultural stories.
Vision
Bukharay Art Collection aims to create and introduce art that remains deeply connected to heritage while looking toward the future.
Bukhara and Balkh are the beginning of this story, but they are not its end.
Bukharay seeks to move beyond geographical borders and the limitations of a single artistic style; to discover and introduce the art of different regions, explore their histories and traditions, and reinterpret them through a contemporary perspective in the form of artistic and handmade creations.
For Bukharay, art is not simply something that is made;
it is something to be discovered, shared, interpreted, and carried from one culture and generation to another.
