A little love from our Wiehler community to Belgium! 🇧🇪🪡🪡

To a wonderful 84-year-old lady who has already stitched more than 26 Gobelins for her children and grandchildren – and still loves every stitch!

Not even the tiny stitches of Petit Point on our Virgin of the Rocks, after Leonardo da Vinci, aren‘t too much.

Designed by humans decades ago. Stitched and loved ever since.

These beautiful Wiehler Gobelin rose designs were once hand-painted, carefully charted and test-stitched, long before computers or AI entered the picture.

They’ve remained unchanged in our archive ever since, and generations of stitchers around the world have brought them to life.

They’re simply lovely, don’t you think?

And yes, we have plenty more roses!
From small rose baskets to large needlepoint projects, explore them in our online catalogue and shop.
And we’re still sending these rose needlepoint kits around the world, packed by Vesna and Irene at our Wiehler Gobelin studio in Austria/Europe.

Each kit comes with original Wiehler Hardanger fabric (23 ct), DMC and Anchor embroidery floss, a counted paper chart, a needle and stitching instructions.

We came across this old video of Vesna cutting our Wiehler Gobelin fabric.

We’re a lot faster at it these days!

This is the fabric we use for all our Wiehler Gobelin needlepoint designs.
It’s 23 count (9 holes per cm) and has woven-in guide lines to make counting your stitches easier.

If you order one of our needlepoint/tapestry kits, we’ve already put everything together for you:

the counted pattern
fabric cut to the right size
all the threads you need
a suitable needle and
stitching instructions.

Stari Most – the famous Old Bridge

In 1982, Wiehler Gobelin released this beautiful needlepoint design, based on a postcard of the historic bridge in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Eleven years later, in 1993, the original bridge was destroyed during the war. It was rebuilt in 2004 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Today, Stari Most is a place where visitors gather to watch the famous bridge divers jump into the Neretva River.

Our needlepoint design captures the original bridge as it stood more than 40 years ago.

Venus and Cupid — Wiehler Gobelin
Article no. 3619-5

After François Boucher, this counted needlepoint design combines Continental Tent Stitch with Petit Point details.

Finished size: approximately 66 × 54 cm (26 × 21¼ inches).
Colours: 37.
Fabric: original Wiehler Hardanger with woven counting guidelines.
Stitch density: 9 stitches per cm across the fabric, approximately 23 stitches per inch (23 count).

The fabric is not printed. You count the stitches from the paper charts and work the design onto the fabric.

The main Gobelin sections

The main design is shown on two paper chart sheets. Work these sections in Continental Tent Stitch using four individual strands separated from the six-stranded embroidery floss.

Each stitch spans two fabric threads vertically and one horizontally, slanting from bottom left to top right. Work from right to left, following the needle path illustrated in the instructions.

Each symbol on the Gobelin chart represents two stitches worked side by side. Together, these two stitches fill the area represented by one chart square.

The Petit Point sections

Separate detail charts show the faces, hands and legs. Work these sections in Petit Point on the same fabric, using three individual strands of embroidery floss.

Each Petit Point stitch spans one fabric thread vertically and one horizontally, slanting in the same direction as the Gobelin stitches.

Each symbol on a Petit Point chart represents one stitch. These shorter stitches allow the facial features and other small details to be rendered more finely.

Use the main charts for the Gobelin sections and the separate Petit Point charts for the corresponding detailed areas. Both techniques form part of the same finished picture.
