Grace & Holmes began with a simple fascination:

Why do some spaces stay with us long after we leave them?

Over the years, that question has led me through publishing, visual storytelling, interiors, hospitality and cultural spaces.

Today, Grace & Holmes brings these worlds together through Interior Decoration & Cultural Advisory — helping to create places that feel thoughtful, memorable and emotionally resonant.

I am particularly drawn to the meeting point between heritage and contemporary life:
historic hotels,
cultural institutions,
private interiors,
and spaces where atmosphere matters as much as aesthetics.

Because the most memorable spaces are rarely defined by decoration alone.

They are defined by how they make people feel.

Historic spaces continue to resonate because they were designed with more than function in mind.

Proportion, rhythm, light and atmosphere were treated as part of the experience itself.

Long before the language of “immersive design” existed, these places already understood how environments shape emotion and memory.

Some interiors are remembered not because they are perfect — but because they create a feeling of ease.

A quiet salon.
Soft lighting.
Conversations that linger longer than expected.

The most atmospheric spaces rarely try too hard.

They understand rhythm, proportion and restraint.
They allow people to settle into the experience rather than constantly impressing them.

Perhaps that is why certain historic hotels, cafés and cultural interiors still feel so timeless.

Not because they belong to the past —
but because they still understand how people want to feel.

Some places understand hospitality before a word is spoken.

It is in the lighting.
The rhythm of the room.
The way materials, mirrors and movement create a sense of arrival.

The best hospitality spaces are not only designed to serve.

They are designed to make people feel held for a while.

That is where interiors become atmosphere —
and atmosphere becomes memory.

Some cities feel designed for wandering slowly.

Looking up instead of down.
Taking side streets instead of the obvious route.
Noticing façades, textures, proportions, colour.

The older I get, the more I believe atmosphere shapes us quietly — far beyond interiors alone.

Hospitality, architecture, culture, even the pace of a street:
they all influence how we feel inside a space.

Perhaps that is why certain European places stay with us long after we leave them.

The most interesting interiors are rarely created all at once.

They evolve gradually —
through collecting,
rearranging,
travelling,
remembering.

A chair found years later.
Ceramics gathered over time.
Objects that carry a sense of place long after returning home.

Perhaps that is why certain spaces feel layered rather than decorated.

Not because everything matches perfectly —
but because everything belongs.

A doorway does not need to announce itself to change the feeling of a place.

Sometimes it is the narrow lane,
the uneven stone,
the glimpse of green,
that makes arrival feel almost private.

These small transitions matter.

They are where architecture becomes atmosphere —
before a room has even begun.

Some of Vienna’s most beautiful moments happen quietly.

An evening walk through Schönbrunn.
The last light across the gardens.
A pause before heading home.

Palace Paws began with this feeling:
making cultural experiences feel calmer, more welcoming, and more connected — for people and their companions alike.

Because dogs are part of the story too.

Some spaces do not ask for attention.

They guide it quietly.

Long before trends, interiors were shaped through proportion, rhythm, light, and restraint — principles that still influence how a place feels the moment we enter it.

Often, what stays with us is not decoration itself, but atmosphere:
a sense of clarity,
ease,
and quiet permanence.

The most memorable interiors rarely compete for attention.

They simply know who they are.

Material carries memory.

Not in an obvious way —
but in how it reflects light,
how it ages,
how it settles into a space.

Good interiors don’t erase that.

They work with it.
