There is a reason some rooms feel complete before a single piece of furniture enters them.

Look up.

Ceiling roses, cornices, painted decoration, vaulting, beams — architecture once treated the space above us as part of the room, not simply its lid.

What interests me is not recreating the past.

It is asking what these interiors understood about proportion, rhythm and visual hierarchy that we can still learn from today.

Sometimes the most successful fusion of old and new begins by recognising what the old already does exceptionally well.

Perfect rooms are rarely the most memorable ones.

Sometimes it is the slightly unexpected combination that stays with us.

A faded textile.
A dark piece of furniture.
A portrait whose story we don’t know.
Colours we might never have thought to put together.

Rooms collected over generations have something newly decorated interiors often have to work much harder to achieve: character.

Not everything matches.
Not everything needs to.

The beauty is in the layers — and in allowing a room to tell more than one story.

Perhaps the most interesting interiors aren’t really finished at all.

They simply continue to evolve.

Some things become more beautiful because they have been used.

The faded paint.
The softened edges.
The marks left by weather, hands and time.

I photographed this old door in Verona because there was nothing particularly perfect about it.

And that was precisely what made it beautiful.

The little bronze knocker has probably been lifted thousands of times. The timber has been repaired, painted and weathered. Neither was designed to become a decorative object — they simply acquired character by surviving.

It is something I think about often in interiors.

We are very good at designing things to look old.

But genuine patina is almost impossible to imitate.

Perhaps the most interesting interiors aren’t those in which everything has been restored to perfection, but those that know what not to erase.

A room becomes interesting when it stops trying to match.

Old with new.

Pattern beside pattern.
Art collected over time rather than chosen to fill a wall.

Some of the most memorable interiors are not really “designed” in the conventional sense at all.

They have evolved.

Objects have arrived from different places and different periods. Fabrics have faded. Furniture has moved. Something inherited sits beside something unexpected.

And somehow, the layers begin to tell you who lives there.

For me, this is where an interior acquires soul.

Not through perfection, but through curation, contrast and time.

Perhaps the best rooms should feel less like a finished composition — and more like a story still being written.

A beautiful room doesn’t begin with furniture.

It begins with perspective.

Mirrors have always fascinated me—not simply because they reflect a room, but because they change the way we experience it.

They borrow light.

They extend architecture.

They create balance.

Sometimes they become artwork in their own right.

The most memorable interiors aren’t necessarily filled with expensive pieces.

They’re thoughtfully composed.

Often, one beautiful object in exactly the right place is all that’s needed.

Sometimes the most beautiful rooms aren’t rooms at all.

They’re spaces that invite us to slow down, look up and notice.

I loved how this elegant spiral staircase at Schönbrunn’s Palm House seems to grow naturally from the architecture around it—surrounded by light, glass and lush greenery.

Great design isn’t only about what we see.

It’s about how a place makes us feel.

The answer is rarely a showroom.

More often, it’s a quiet museum on a weekday morning. A forgotten hotel corridor. A palace staircase that has welcomed visitors for centuries.

It’s easy to admire an entire room.

What interests me more are the choices that most people walk past.

The curve of a handrail.
The weight of a brass lantern.
The proportion of a doorway.
The craftsmanship hidden in a single carved detail.

These are rarely the loudest elements in a space.

But they’re often the reason a place feels timeless.

Beautiful design isn’t simply seen.
