‘It is truly incredible Hayley, thank you so much. It really means a lot to me how much care you’ve taken with this and I’m grateful Molly and Coolie can now come home 🥰’

When a client asks if you can paint not one but two black beauties in a piece, you agree. Combining a tall horse and a waist height canine with a myriad of references took some time but the outpouring of love once this piece reached its forever home made it all worth it.

Could you be the Molly to my Coolie? How beautiful is this friendship.
Recently I shared a horse portrait of the Black Beauty that is Coolie. This is Molly, the other half to this partnership.
My generous client shared many images of these two and water become a repeating element. The final portrait features blues, salt and a background wash that gives the nod to this aquatic connection.

The colder days have moved in. Time to bunker. Blanket over the lap and heater under the studio desk I’m working on a very detailed piece. Lots of layers in its colourful compositional puzzle. Might just be the perfect unveiling for spring…

Meanwhile, I thought it a good time to introduce ‘Coolie’. Here’s a small work in progress carousel featuring the first half of this glossy duo. Trusted for a second time to memorialise family, I had the privilege of creating this tribute.

I love sharing these retrospective glimpses, taking stock of how an artwork came to be. The salt trick really did something for this piece and I owe a lot to indanthrene blue x

Seasonal depresso espresso feels be gone! This Saturday come join a vibrant collection of Adelaide’s talented craftspeople and artists at the The Wheatsheaf Hotel as it is transformed into a buzzing marketplace. The wonderful Ashlee Hopkins has made a great post highlighting all the ceramics and glassies involved.

Ringwood Arts Co. and I (former Glassy turned pro breakable gifts wrapper) will be there slinging ceramic seconds, samples & more and portraitsbyhayley will have a collection of cards on the table too. Dm for prints or specific requests.

Would love to see you! Support local makers, have a chat, rid the winter blues with some retail therapy and enjoy a beverage, weekend sorted! x

This is where I belong, hand stroking my strong head, curled up on my persons lap where I fit so perfectly. I’ll say it will my eyes, this is where I belong so in this portrait, this is where I’ll stay…

Thank you for your trust. I was so sorry to hear of your loss between first contact and when your waitlist time slot was next. I already knew the piece was going to be special, to have that additional importance placed upon it I’m so honoured.

Never ‘just’ a dog.

This piece has captured a few country dog loving hearts and as a girl who comes from mallee scrub myself, that feels pretty good.

While I speak about the process, time and soul that goes into these pieces a bit, ultimately it’s the joy of someone connecting with a portrait that seals the deal.

If I ever tell you I want to stop painting, call me a liar, pour me a coffee, maybe feed me a little snack… I’m sure I’ll be right as rain.

The final share of Rocky. Thank you for your trust and wonderful collection of imagery.

A really raw share…
It’s no secret that I began portraitsbyhayley as a new mother.
This becoming cracked me open. It pushed me to the brink of my edges and I was never to be put back together the same. I don’t know one mother who is.

That feels like a lifetime ago. But history sometimes repeats. The push through sleepless nights, the raising of a human navigating big feelings and new experiences while also trying to regulate myself and reestablish my identity as an artist has had a resurgence. This time round feels different. My daughter is 6 and my art career is at a different stage. I no longer share her face on social media for safety reasons but my world outside of these portraits is very much lovingly being her mother.

Truth is, lately I’ve felt this private feeling of silencing my voice and hiding my existence as a mum. And how absurd this is has only really just hit me.

Mothers are fierce. Mothers are women who are a part of this unspoken club. We know what sacrifice looks like. We know what it is to feel less than even though we are doing it all. We know how to hold more than one should ever be able to carry. I also believe this applies to women in general, but I digress.

One of my dearest friends has just become a mother. And while I need to dig deep to remember leaps, feeding, sleep schedules, etc I can still relate to that feeling of finding yourself while giving most of yourself to something, someone else. Doing so while living in a society that doesn’t really make you feel like it has the capacity to hear your struggles or provide adequate support is enough to send anyone insane.

This Mother’s Day I just want to acknowledge I’m a mum artist. The mum part of that wants to be seen. She does not need to be silenced to be relatable or worthy. Being a mother is not all of me but it is integral to my being. I hope all mothers feel celebrated, seen and powerful today however and wherever you showed up.

To anyone who has hard feelings around this day, whatever they may be, I have those also. You too are seen x

Did you know a painting has the power to make time stand still? Lucky, because they never stay this small for long enough.
Absolute privilege to witness the memories that came flooding back of this pup who became the ‘best working dog’ and has now gone over the rainbow bridge.

Thank you to my wonderful client
