Your shower niche is probably in the wrong spot.

It’s one of the most common things I flag on plans before anyone starts tiling.

The niche needs to sit within a single tile run. If it doesn’t, your tiler has to cut tiles to make it work, and that cut line is going to be visible every single day. The right position depends on your tile format, your grout lines, and exactly where that run starts on your wall.

This is the kind of detail that a good designer resolves before the waterproofing goes in. Not after. If your plans are still in progress, this is worth checking right now.

But if you have space go with a shower shelf like we did here. Same rules apply, height needs to align to your tiles.

5 bathroom decisions most people get wrong.

And by the time they notice, it’s too late to change them without ripping things out.

1. Tile layout starting point.
If nobody nominates where the layout begins before the tiler arrives, you risk sliver cuts in the most visible corners and a niche that lands awkwardly across two tile faces. This needs to be set out on paper first.

2. Floor waste position.
The waste needs to sit on the corner of a tile so you don’t get cut lines in your floor tiles. Get this wrong and your drain that looks completely off.

3. Niche placement within the tile run.
A niche should be surrounded by whole tiles on all four sides. If it isn’t, every edge is a cut and the finish shows it. This has to be resolved before waterproofing, not after.

4. Lighting position relative to the mirror.
A downlight behind where you stand throws shadow across your face. A wall light at eye level on either side, or a dedicated mirror light, fixes this entirely. It needs to be on the electrical plan before rough-in.

5. Vanity clearance from the shower screen.
There needs to be a minimum 50mm between the edge of your vanity and the shower screen. Any less and you cannot get a cloth or squeegee into that gap to clean it. It becomes a permanently damp, impossible to maintain corner. This is a detail that needs to be checked on the floor plan before cabinetry is ordered.

None of these are finishing details. They are decisions that need to be made early, in the right order, before the trades are on site.

Save this before your next meeting.

Before I look at a single tile sample or tap finish, I ask my clients one question. “How do you want to feel when you walk in here?”

Not what they want it to look like. How they want to feel.

And that single answer changes everything. The materials. The lighting. The layout. The way the room breathes.

Design is not decoration. It’s the architecture of how you live.

If you’re starting a build or reno and you haven’t been asked that question yet, that’s worth thinking about.

Sourcing finishes for a projects is one of my favourite parts of designing but it is so important to make sure you look at each space individually but also all of the materials together.

If you are sourcing for your project please get physically samples of the finishes you are using and also look at them in different lights and this really affects colours.

If you can’t take samples home bring your other samples to the showrooms. This really helps you see the whole picture.

Last week I went to an event and heard all about and . Both brands have such beautiful stories and products rooted in quality and sustainability — and the more I learned, the more I realised how much they have in common.

One makes fireclay sinks and bathware. The other, sheepskin rugs and throws. Different categories entirely but the same conviction that the best materials are the ones that have simply always been around.

Fireclay has been used in ceramics for centuries. Sheepskin even longer. Neither brand is working with something new, they’re working with something proven. And in Wilson Dorset’s case, giving sheepskins a second life that keeps them out of landfill.

That’s the kind of thinking I want to put in front of you. Not trends. Not noise. Just brands doing things properly, with materials that earn their place.

Good design doesn’t follow cycles, it outlasts them.

This flat lay was my entry into their competition (which I won).

Before I touch a single swatch, I need to know one thing, how do you want to feel on your home?

Swipe to see how that one question shapes everything.

This is what I do when sourcing tiles for a project.

1: Be prepared. It can feel so overwhelming when you walk in if you don’t have a plan before heading in. Take the time to workout the look and feel you are after and think per space.

2. Save photos and references to your phone so it’s easy to reference when you’re in the showroom. This helps you not drift from your original idea and helps you stay on track with overall look and feel for your home.

3. Just walk around the showroom before you ask for help. See what’s there and you might see something you weren’t looking for but fits your aesthetic

4. Ask for help. Showroom assistance are great and can help you pair selection or suggest alternatives. Show them your references so they understand the direction you want to go in.

The fastest way to elevate a space - without a major renovation.

This renovation didn’t need structural work or a full redesign - just thoughtful, strategic cosmetic upgrades that completely transformed the feel of the space.

When you understand how to use colour, finishes, lighting and proportion well, you can elevate a room without blowing the budget or starting from scratch. That’s the power of good design - it brings clarity, purpose and calm to a space that once felt tired or disjointed.

If you’re planning your first renovation and feeling unsure about what will make the biggest difference, let this be your reminder: you don’t always need “more”, you just need the right decisions.
