What’s on the Baabum needles?

I’m sure I’m not alone in being busy over the holiday period, but I’ve always got something on the needles and new colourway idea brewing..

It’s so hot where I live in Brisbane, Australia, especially after going to Tasmania over the new year week..

We loved it so much down there that I’ve already booked another trip down in the coldest season, and planning next wooden creations!

I’ve followed knitwear designer Elenor Mortensen for awhile and have many of her gorgeous designs favourited on Ravelry.

I dyed up ‘raspberry sorbet’ using Baabum possum merino, which is sourced from the incredible Wild Earth Yarns Ltd

Then used a colour way from the ‘ faraway faerie’ collection which is based on Enid Blyton books for the fair isle design, and over-dyed some faraway faerie with raspberry sorbet to give a cool effect on the neck, cuffs and waistband..

Because I can’t help myself, when I get colour visions - I also created some sweet sorbet semi solids in Baabum BFL 2ply to add to the fair isle, fortunately I’ll have plenty over to use for other lightweight knits..

I can’t wait to see how this one turns out - I’m really thrilled with how the colours work together, it’s going to be a gorgeous knit!

New Baa Bum LOGO launched!

Its finally here and it looks incredible, with the cutest graphic baa bum's you will find!

I absolutely LOVE it, the awesome part is the incredibly talented Kristie Kate who designed the "4 bags full" site logo around 18 years ago, and now has created the updated baa bum logo.

Which makes it even more meaningful- so happy with how it looks 🐑💙

Sustainability: While we work behind the scenes towards the Baa Bum product launch and consider all the elements of ecommerce, the one thing I was struggling with was contributing to amount of plastic and packaging in our environment.

I have been researching high and low, and were thrilled to find an Australian company called HeapsGood packaging who make sustainable packaging products and their company mission is all about creating sustainable ecommerce packaging!

From our shipping labels, to our boxes, bags, and padded mailers- we have selected a range of recycled paper, fully compostable, biodegradable, all without compromising quality.

We are super proud to use their awesome mailers, compostable labels and recycled box and bags

A tale of beautiful handspun yarn .. ‘Handspun by Jan’ created by BJ's Colourways & Collectibles, and found in a gorgeous little shop called Frank’s Corner…

I took it to the top of a mountain to wind it into a ball, combining two favourite passions, hiking and yarn!

It then became a scarf for my beautiful my mum Maggie, whose favourite colour is pumpkin, and back in Australia, she has it now and loves it !

Getting Baa Bum Handknits up and running again has taken longer than expected, I’ve been busy creating test yarns, sourcing new suppliers and working out how I’ll sell.

In the middle of it all, I’ve been planning a holiday to the wool capital of the world- New Zealand.

We flew into Auckland to visit family, then to Christchurch where my destination was one of my favourite wool creators in the world- Wild Earth Yarns, where I bought many samples, and hoping to use some of these as part of my new Baa Bum range.

We drove to Lake Takepo, and Aoraki( Mount Cook) down to Kinloch and Glenorchy.

Our last stop was Queenstown, where I found my most unique wools : the gorgeous Horana wool made with Husky Dog fur, yes you read correctly, it is 35% Husky / 65% Merino - I am so curious to see how it absorbs colour and knits up!

The gorgeous lady who created it, had a team of nine racing huskies who all generated a lot of fur, she approached a local wool company, coincidentally Wild Earth Yarns, who told her she would need 50 kgs of clean fur to create her yarn! She said it took her and her husband so long time to gather it all, and now they selling via the Queenstown markets.

As she only has two huskies remaining, I doubt I will ever get this gorgeous wool again, unless someone else out there is crazy enough to gather that much husky fur!

I’m now back in Australia and finally sharing some of the incredible haul I collected while driving around the South Island.

I was so incredibly inspired by the colours of NZ, the mountains, rivers, moss, native birds, and greenstone, I think my first wool collection will be connected to this.
