For those of you who missed the stories yesterday…

I have passed my assessment to become a probationary member of the Australian Knife Makers Guild 🍻

The process involves a state delegate from the guild assessing 3 examples of your work. For this initial assessment, you must achieve a score of 10 or higher to pass. I got a score of 16 and some great constructive feedback which I have already started implementing.

In 12 months I can submit 3 more knives (which meet parameters specified by the Guild) to apply for full Guild membership. The pass mark for that assessment is 18.

Given this milestone of becoming a probationary member of the Guild, and also being it’s pretty much exactly 2 years since I made my first knife, it seems like a good time to have a look at how far I have come.

Pictured, we have my first ever knife - hand forged in the garden shed, mono steel, K-tip kitchen knife with a full tang G10 scale handle with stainless steel pins. She is rough!

Then we have my latest blade, made almost exactly 2 years later - 180 layer Damascus chef knife with faceted brass spacer and ribbed fruited Mallee handle. It’s not perfect, but it’s an improvement from the first 😂
