The Profile,

For this bowl, the profile needs to flow continuously from the outside foot all the way to the rim. The eye should travel naturally from the base to the very top edge.

Near the foot, I like to introduce a subtle concave detail. It’s a small refinement, but an important one. It creates a natural place for the fingers to nestle when the bowl is picked up, making it feel comfortable and inviting in the hand.

There is an incredible amount of detail wrapped up in this one section. Curves, proportions, transitions, and balance all play a role. But above all else, the bowl has to feel right. If someone picks it up and it sits naturally in their hands, then I’ve done my job.

The exact profile matters less than the experience it creates. A good bowl isn’t just pleasing to the eye; it’s pleasing to hold.

Have a lovely day.

Kerry.

The Foot.
With this bowl, the foot will be staying intact. Most consumers of turned items don’t consider how a bowl sits on a table or how it creates the illusion of floating and nor should they. They simply enjoy the finished piece for its beauty, balance, and everyday usability, which is the ultimate reward of the craft.

The base of the bowl is crucial to its overall feel and the way it presents itself to the world. From the foot comes everything. Like a good foundation to a home, take care of the foundation, and the rest will fall into place. A well-designed foot provides not only stability but also a quiet sense of balance and presence that elevates the entire piece from a functional object to something more intentional and harmonious.

Coring bowls saves all the internal timber that would otherwise end up as shavings on the floor.

Most of the time, I’m able to salvage three to four bowl cores from a single blank — which would normally only produce one bowl.

For more information, check out my YouTube channel and Woodcut Tools - Woodturning Tools and Accessories website.

Cheers,
Kezza

In this short video, I quickly explain why I cut a relief cut before making the full cut when coring out bowls.

If you’d like more information, send me a message and I’ll send you the link to the full video.

Hope you’re enjoying the week and creating something on the lathe.

In this video, I’m showing you exactly how to save bowls from turning into shavings.

This is the Woodcut Tools Max 4 Bowl Saver. It allows you to salvage up to four bowls, depending on the size of the blank, or what I like to call the mother bowl.

If you’re having trouble with your bowl saver or want to know more about it, head over to my YT channel. I’ve been there before and documented what works.

Thanks for watching.

Woodturning isn’t a one-size-fits-all craft. Some turners are drawn to certain shapes, while others might see things completely differently.

Over time I’ve come back to three bowl shapes that I really enjoy making: a broad rim, a rolled rim, and a traditional form. These shapes have worked well for me. They feel good in the hands, look appealing to the eye, and sit nicely on the table.

This is the focus of my new video on the channel. I hope to see you over there, and let me know what you think in the comments.
