Massive trigger point release of the long head of triceps.

Sometimes we hit a ‘satellite’ trigger point whilst dry needling, meaning it releases not just the point under the needle but also any it is connected to within the muscle. That’s why this entire muscle body appears to have a twitch response!

Gait assessment at the pelvis in a racing Thoroughbred - what can you see? 👀

This is the same horse in the same treadmill session from the post two days ago.

A 30-second clip of a back palpation assessment - what am I looking for? 👇🏼

- Muscle tone: how firm/soft is the muscle?
- Pain reactivity: does the horse show any signs of discomfort?
- Abnormalities: are there any unexpected lumps/swelling/discontinuities in the muscle?

These are the three main things to look for in a palpatory assessment - they must be combined with movement analysis, joint range of motion testing and special tests (as required) for a full clinical picture!

TUBER COXAE FRACTURE - can you spot it?? 👀

This injury is most common from a blunt trauma such as horses ‘knocking’ their hips on doors/fences or sometimes a fall onto their side (suspected for this horse as the affected hemipelvis was also caudally rotated compared to the non-affected side). These can recover remarkably well after a period of rest and rehab. Guided rehabilitation is essential to get them back to their goals after injury (which may also need to be adjusted depending on the horse’s intended use).

Please note, this is an old injury on a client who presented for assessment. The horse trotted up with plaiting in his hind limbs otherwise sound and had no swelling or direct reactivity around the injured site (plenty of compensatory muscle patterns though!!).
