This one took some doing!
I was approached to make a new entrance sign for an independent living complex, they wanted "Classy, elegant and stylish". I decided on an Ash board, with a Walnut border for a nice contrast.
I knew free handing this carving would be very tricky so opted to have some templates 3D printed. This also meant having to spend £40 on a single router bit (bananas for scale!)
After my biggest ever panel glue up (2 meters by 450mm!) I was ready to carve. I spent more time measuring and marking out where each letter needed to go than actually carving, as one slip up with the Kerning (a new word I learned) would ruin the look of the entire piece. A link of paint to make the letters stand out and a good sand later and it was nearly ready.
After that it was 3 coats of finish and prepping the posts with a Walnut stain and mortices to accept the panel. I did a dry fit of the whole sign and could barely move in my workshop!
Fitting day was on one of the hottest days of the year, and digging 3 foot holes was not much fun!
After lifting it into place (with great difficulty by myself) I stood back to admire my work in the sunshine.
What. A. Beauty. Couldn't be happier with it.
Keep an eye out if you're heading towards Blairgowrie on the Coupar Angus Road 😁
