Shell Collection Ethics
At Fractured Flowers/Ethical Decor we believe in sustainable environmental practices.
Whether it’s the vines and trees we use in our vases and platters, the dyes and colours used on our botanicals, and the shells we have collected from across Asia.
Our shells are collected from designated collection areas, from fish farms and developed areas.
WE DO NOT PURCHASE ANY SHELLS FROM DEEP SEA DIVERS, FROM REEFS OR RESTRICTED AREAS.
NOR DO OUR SUPPLIERS DESTROY LAND / BEACHES TO COLLECT SHELLS
All our shells come from 3 main sources.
1/ Designated collection areas – these areas are specifically for shell collection.
2/ A great deal of our shells come from fish / seafood farms where stock is bred and raised and the meat used with the shells collected as residue. Stock numbers are monitored and restrictions apply to qtys harvested.
3/ As with all cities some beachfront areas are developed for housing, roads or other infrastructure. We are allowed to harvest the shells during the reclamation process to minimize what we need to collect from the other sources.
My suppliers all adhere to a strong conviction that shells and sea-life must be sustained to ensure good environmental results and the ongoing economic benefit this industry brings to the region impoverished residents.
This is why at various times some shells and sizes are unavailable as we monitor and maintain good stock levels to ensure that each species will be around long after we have gone.
