paintbox Hi, I’m Katherine and I’m a local artist here in beautiful Karratha. I love painting portraits, botanicals, wildlife and landscapes.

Boutique fine art & music studio in Karratha | Drawing, painting, mixed-media, guitar & drums | Artist-led workshops, corporate sessions & private bookings | Creativity through skill, technique & true studio practice | Home of Rose Artist I am a mother of two wonderful children and I have been creating art ever since I was a little girl. Predominantly self-taught and having acquired private lessons from a Dutch watercolour artist, my media are watercolour, gouache, acrylic, charcoal, pencil and ink. My home studio is open for private art lessons for children ages 6 to 9, 10 to 13 and adults. If you or your child loves art, whether a beginner or an intermediate learner, and would like to learn techniques in brush work, colour theory and principles of drawing, I would invite you to attend one of my classes.

BOTANICA | Friday Artists

Our Friday Artists have been adding their own colourful interpretations to one of nature's most recognisable botanical forms — the Monstera leaf!

Last week, more of our young artists completed their paintings, bringing together beautiful washes of watercolour, playful colour combinations and bold black backgrounds to create some wonderfully striking results.

Although everyone began with the same subject, no two paintings are alike. From soft pastel blends to vibrant bursts of pink, yellow and blue, each artwork reflects the individual choices and creative instincts of its maker.

Beyond learning new techniques, our Botanica program is about developing an artist's eye — learning to observe, interpret and discover the creative possibilities within the natural world.

Such a pleasure seeing these finished pieces and the proud smiles behind them!

THE JOURNAL STUDIO | Pages in Progress

A beautiful mix of colour, imagery and imagination filled our tables at The Journal Studio last week!

Our young creatives have been preparing the pages of their art journals, experimenting with collage, watercolour painting and carefully selected cutouts to build their own visual compositions.

From botanical illustrations and patterned papers to hand-painted details and playful typography, each page is becoming a personal exploration of ideas, interests and artistic expression.

One of the loveliest things about art journalling is that there are no rules about what a page should become. It's a place to collect inspiration, explore techniques, layer unexpected elements and allow ideas to develop naturally.

We're enjoying watching these journals take shape, one wonderfully individual page at a time!

ARTFORM | Colour, Pattern & Composition

A little creativity, a pair of scissors and a whole lot of colour!

Last Wednesday, our ARTFORM artists took their vibrant painted patterns from the previous session and gave them an entirely new life.

Carefully cutting out heart shapes in different sizes, they arranged and layered their colourful creations onto large sheets of watercolour paper, exploring composition, spacing and the relationship between positive and negative space.

What began as an exploration of colour and mark-making became a collection of playful, contemporary artworks, each with its own rhythm and personality.

We love how ARTFORM encourages our young artists to see possibilities beyond the original painting, discovering how even the simplest shapes can become something wonderfully expressive.

BOTANICA | Wednesday Artists

Our Wednesday Artists have been bringing a wonderful sense of colour and creativity to their Monstera studies!

Last week, some of our young artists put the finishing touches on their paintings, transforming familiar botanical forms into striking compositions filled with vibrant colour and expressive patterns.
From delicate transitions in watercolour to bold contrasts against black, each artist approached the same subject with their own creative sensibility.

One of the things we value most at paintbox is giving our young artists the freedom to interpret, experiment and make their work distinctly their own.

A lovely collection of artworks, each as individual as the artist behind it!

BOTANICA | Tuesday Artists

A beautiful burst of colour in the studio last week as some of our Tuesday Artists completed their Monstera paintings!

Working with vibrant watercolours against dramatic black backgrounds, our young artists explored colour blending, contrast and the distinctive shapes of Monstera foliage.

Each painting has its own personality, with wonderful variations in colour, pattern and artistic interpretation.

We love seeing our young artists grow in confidence, develop their individual styles and take such pride in their finished work.

Botanica is off to a colourful start!

BOTANICA | Friday Artists

Our Friday Artists began their first Botanica project this week, exploring the distinctive shapes and intricate forms of the monstera leaf through watercolour.

Working with an expressive palette of colours, our young artists experimented with layering, blending and allowing pigments to move and mingle across the paper. Rather than reproducing the natural colours of the leaf, we encouraged them to explore their own interpretations, creating vibrant compositions full of unexpected colour combinations.

The first stage is now complete, with beautiful washes of colour establishing the foundations of each artwork.

Next week, we'll return to these paintings to develop the finer details and bring our colourful monstera leaves to completion.

A wonderful start to our Term 4 exploration of the botanical world.

THE JOURNAL STUDIO | Thursday Artists

Our first session of The Journal Studio began with the artists making their journals entirely their own.
Using an assortment of decorative papers, vintage illustrations, botanical imagery, watercolours, drawings and ephemera, our young artists spent the afternoon designing and personalising the covers of their mixed-media journals.

Each cover became a composition of carefully chosen images, colours and textures, reflecting the individual interests, tastes and imaginations of its maker.

What I love about this process is how much it reveals about each artist. The images they are drawn to, the unexpected combinations they create, and the personal details they choose to include all become part of their emerging visual language.

Over the coming weeks, these journals will gradually fill with experiments, observations, ideas and discoveries, without the constraints of conventional artmaking.

For now, the covers are complete, and each journal already has a personality of its own.
A lovely beginning to ten weeks of creative exploration.
