After months of planning, testing ideas, collecting treasures and filling shelves with supplies, our Winter School Holiday Program is finally here. 😊

And there is creative fun for everyone!! From potions and slime, rainbow making, fairy wonderlands, LEGO wind challenges (collab with Brickville), fidget creations, tiny worlds and plenty of opportunities for kids to experiment, create and get wonderfully absorbed in the process.

As always, we’re less interested in perfect outcomes and more interested in curious kids, big ideas and the joy and confidence that comes from making something with your own hands.

We can’t wait to fill the studio with creativity these holidays.

Meet Lucy’s gold shoes. ✨

Last week at After School Makers Club, 8-year-old Lucy arrived with a mission: she wanted to make herself a pair of shoes.

Each week I set a creative prompt or themes to explore, but kids are always welcome to follow their own ideas too. Lucy was very clear on hers.

First, she measured her feet. Then she carefully selected materials, considering comfort, sensory feel and durability. She sketched, cut, tested, connected and refined until these glorious gold creations emerged.

Did they fit? Not quite.

Would they survive a trip to the playground? Definitely not.

Did that stop Lucy? Also no.

One of my favourite things about Whimsy Disco is watching children explore an idea that matters to them. Not because someone told them what to make, but because they’re curious enough to ask, “What if?”

Sometimes the outcome works perfectly. Sometimes it doesn’t. But either way, they’ve planned, experimented, solved problems, adapted and learned something along the way.

And because so many of our materials come from op shops, recycling centres, destashes and rescued craft supplies, I feel even better about giving kids the freedom to test big ideas. To try things that might not work.

Because creativity isn’t really about making perfect things.

It’s about having the confidence to start.

💛 And Lucy definitely started something special.

This week we received a beautiful new bundle of cards from Wally Paper Co, hand delivered by Flemington local Beck.

Sweet, colourful, slightly cheeky and very relatable 💌
We’ve got Mother’s Day covered, plus cards for birthdays, celebrations and all the other bits of life too.

… and join us for a night of creative fun this Thursday 6.30-8.30pm.

Why? Cause it turns out cutting up nice bits of fabric scraps and carefully tucking them together is… weirdly satisfying. Like a wellbeing retreat for tired brains!

It’s called Kinusaiga. Japanese no-sew fabric art. It’s easy and lots of fun.

It’s a small group, adult workshop - no skills needed!
