It’s easy to assume that when a room doesn’t feel quite right, something must be missing.

Another chair. Another piece of art. Another accessory to fill that empty surface.

But sometimes the answer is the opposite.

Editing back competing pieces, simplifying the styling and creating a little breathing room can completely change how a space feels.

Good design isn’t about filling every available space. It’s about giving the right things enough room to make an impact.

A room can be filled with pieces you genuinely love and still not feel quite right.

Often, it’s not because you chose the wrong things. It’s because too many of them are trying to be the hero at the same time.

When furniture, artwork, finishes and styling are all competing for attention, the room can start to feel busy rather than considered.

The designer’s edit is about deciding what deserves the focus, what can take a quieter role and what might need to go altogether.

Because beautiful pieces make a much bigger impact when you give them room to shine.

DM me STUDIO if your home has all the pieces but still doesn’t feel pulled together.

One of the biggest parts of interior design is knowing when a space has enough.

Not every empty corner needs furniture. Not every wall needs artwork. Not every beautiful finish needs to make its way into the same room.

Sometimes editing things back is exactly what allows the strongest elements to shine.

Good design isn’t about how much you can add. It’s about knowing what deserves to stay.

DM me STUDIO if your home needs a more considered eye.

If you want your home to still feel beautiful in ten years, the question isn’t “What’s everyone choosing right now?”

Ask yourself, **“Would I still choose this if I stopped seeing it everywhere tomorrow?”**

Trends can absolutely have a place in your home, but the more permanent and expensive the decision, the more important it is to look beyond what’s having a moment.

Choose flooring, cabinetry, stone and fixed finishes because they genuinely suit your home and the way you want to live. Then let the easier-to-change pieces bring in the trends you’re loving right now.

The goal isn’t to create a home that never changes. It’s to give it a foundation you won’t feel pressured to change every few years.

It’s easy to make design decisions based on what you’re seeing everywhere right now.

But instead of asking, “Is this on trend?” ask yourself, “Will I still love living with this when the trend has moved on?”

That one question changes how you approach permanent finishes, materials and investment pieces.

It doesn’t mean your home needs to be safe or boring. It means choosing a foundation with longevity, then leaving room for your style to evolve around it.

Because the best homes don’t chase every new trend. They still feel like you long after it’s gone.

A brand new renovation shouldn’t start feeling dated only a few years after you finish it.

But when too many decisions are based on what’s having a moment right now, that can happen surprisingly quickly.

1️⃣ Using too many trends at once
One current detail can add personality. Five competing trends can tie your entire home to one particular moment.

2️⃣ Putting trends into permanent finishes
Flooring, cabinetry, stone and tiles are expensive to change, so these decisions deserve more longevity.

3️⃣ Choosing what’s popular over what suits the home
A trend might look beautiful elsewhere, but that doesn’t automatically mean it belongs in your space.

The goal isn’t to avoid trends. It’s to create a strong foundation that still gives your home room to evolve.

I’m not designing your home for the next trend cycle. I’m designing it for you to actually love living in for years.

That means knowing when a trend adds something worthwhile and when it’s about to become a very expensive permanent decision.

Good design can still be current, interesting and full of personality. It just shouldn’t come with an expiry date.

Trends can absolutely have a place in a well designed home. The key is knowing where you can have fun and where a little more restraint pays off.

Here’s how I think about it:

1️⃣ Paint and styling pieces
These are easy to update, so they’re perfect places to experiment with something more current.

2️⃣ Furniture and accessories
Selected pieces can bring personality and freshness without defining the entire home.

And where would I think twice?

3️⃣ Flooring and tiles
They’re expensive and disruptive to replace, so I want these choices to have longevity.

4️⃣ Cabinetry and stone
These form such a big part of the home’s foundation that I’d rather choose them for lasting appeal than one particular moment in design.

You don’t need to avoid trends. You just need to know which ones you want to be living with ten years from now.

A home that ages well isn’t created by avoiding everything current. It comes from knowing which decisions need longevity and where there’s room to have a little more fun.

The flooring, materials and permanent elements create the foundation. Furniture, styling and smaller details can evolve as your taste and life change.

The goal isn’t to design a home that looks exactly the same in ten years. It’s to create one that can evolve without needing to be completely reinvented.

Good design should give you something worth building on for years to come.

Not every trend needs to be avoided. The real question is how difficult it will be to change when you no longer love it.

A trending cushion, paint colour, artwork or occasional piece? Have fun with it. Those are easy ways to let your home evolve.

But flooring, cabinetry, stone, tiles and other permanent finishes deserve a little more thought. Changing your mind later can mean trades, demolition and a much bigger investment.

Good design isn’t about ignoring trends. It’s about knowing which ones can come and go without taking your renovation budget with them.
