A couple of new friends freshly arrived from Japan.

The tanuki is a kind of Japanese raccoon dog, mythologised as a shapeshifter. Watch the Pom Poko animated film if you haven’t!

And the lucky Maneki Neko cat, who beckons to you to visit. This one is quite large and good vintage condition.

Dan found this treasure in Osaka last month.

It’s a pair of gilt brass Japanese lanterns (early 20th C), with beautifully fine chrysanthemum detailing.

They each take a little candle, sold as a pair.

We are listing recent finds regularly over the next few weeks. Most pieces are one-offs, so if you see something that makes you feel something, don’t hesitate!

As my buying trip comes to a close, i thought I would take some time out. In the hills just north of Kyoto there is a complex of the beautiful temples. Today I visited the moss gardens of Sanzen-in and had tea looking out at the 700 year old pine tree at Hosen-in. A lovely way to finish the trip which had been fun but exhausting!

Treasure box with a secret compartment 🪎

This antique Japanese Suzuri Bali calligraphy box is from the Edo period, close to 200 years old.

It would have been carried by a scribe with the lockable drawer for money and other precious things.

A couple of iron nails were missing, so Daniel has recreated matching nails to blend in and ensure it can be used again.

These boxes don’t last long, so if you’re interested, check it out online in New Arrivals!

We all need some extra luck sometimes.

This figure of the god of fortune Daikoku that was carved over 100 years ago, would have been rubbed to bring good luck.

This one is heavily worn, with chips and scratches, making its long history beautifully visible.

A nice example of the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi and the honouring of materials that change over time.

Sometimes it’s the shape that you connect with.

These new footed incense burners has the sweetest proportions, somehow elegant and cute at the same time.

They come complete with a little bag of white ash and a lid.

Originally designed as a Japanese bath/shower stool, that you sit on to wash before hopping in a bath.

They pair beautifully with our Japanese Kontex towels.

We appreciate your patience with these as always.

If we could have brought the house back from Japan, as well as the lantern…we would have!

But the lantern is beautiful in and of itself, and has a lovely warm glow when lit up.

This antique Japanese lantern, complete with candle wax of yesteryear, comes in the original Paulownia box dating it to the year 1935
