Nostalgic visit to the Chateau Tongariro where I worked for 5 months during the ski season, 54 years ago (1972). We caught the gondola to the top of Mt Ruapehu where we had lunch. 54 years ago there was no road to the ski fields and we had to catch a goat (caterpillar type bus) to the foot of the ski fields and chairlift. Now you can drive the 6kms up there. They’d had snow on Sunday so there was snow at the top of the mountain. The Chateau is still beautiful even though it’s been closed for three years because it doesn’t meet New Zealand’s new earthquake requirements. Everyone’s hoping they’ll find a buyer for it who will be prepared to spend the $millions it needs to make it earthquake proof. I always wanted to go back and stay there but now I’ve missed my chance.

Great to drop by Ellis House Art Centre - Art Gallery over the weekend and catch up with artist Jenny Ellis-Newman Artist at the opening of the Ellis House Members Exhibition.

A fantastic showcase of local talent. The exhibition is on until 16 February, well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

I love painting children and this recent study in black and white is one of four in a series of children, dogs and ducks that I have been creating. Only two remain, the others having been sold.
