Episode Seven - Born Guilty - The Price of the Silver Spoon
He built it from nothing.
Or close enough to nothing that the distance between where he started and where he stands now is the defining fact of his life.
Every decision made under pressure.
Every sacrifice that didn’t make the family photo.
Every year he was present in body and somewhere else entirely.
In the worry, the planning, the relentless forward motion of a man who understood at a cellular level what it feels like to not have enough.
He knows the edge.
He knows exactly how fast it can disappear because he watched it built inch by inch from ground that wasn’t solid and then he watches his children receive it.
Effortlessly.
As a given.
As the water they swim in - invisible, assumed, unremarkable.
And something in him - something he would never say at a dinner table, something he can barely admit to himself - feels the distance between what it cost him and what it costs them.
He loves them.
Completely and somewhere underneath that love is something that looks uncomfortably like jealousy.
Not of their wealth.
Of their ease.
Of the fact that they get to have what he had to bleed for.
