Built in 1924 to the designs of Melbourne practice Klingender & Hamilton, the Barwon Heads Golf Club boasts key trademarks of the Arts & Crafts movement – truth in materials, simplicity of form and handcrafted detail.
Drawing from these principles, our approach to the extensive restoration of the Clubhouse ensures the safeguard and celebration of the 100 year old building, re-establishing its quiet integrity through sensitive and intelligent upgrades.
Dark timbers, filtered light and natural motifs create a warm, familiar atmosphere that feels deeply rooted in the building’s origins, blending seamlessly with contemporary inclusions such as new Australian furniture, custom carpets and unique solid timber joinery.
After extensive testing and trialling, an ideal shade of green was selected that not only paid tribute to the architectural pedigree but echoed the natural surroundings of the coastal landscape; “...it became the foundational colour connecting all the other elements together,” reflects Director Sonia Simpfendorfer.

Rather than nostalgically recreating the past, we embraced the essence of the original Arts & Crafts architecture of the Barwon Heads Golf Club – its simplicity, handcrafted sensibility and connection to nature – then reimagined it for modern use.
Grounded in five guiding pillars, the Clubhouse project celebrates a coexistence of past and present.
Tradition is honoured with subtle, cohesive interventions improved flow, comfort and spatial clarity bringing the rambling Clubhouse up to a new level of modern functionality.
The ever-present natural landscape is brought inside through careful colour and materiality selections, drawn directly from coastline, flora and light and a sense of belonging makes this a place of warmth, familiarity and welcome.
“Making the transitions seamless between new and old was absolutely key. We approached the 100 year old Arts & Crafts pedigree of the building with great respect, but were not afraid to introduce what was needed to allow this landmark to spend another 100 years bringing people and place together,” reflects Director Sonia Simpfendorfer.

Nestled in the coastal dunes on Wathaurung country, the Barwon Heads Golf Club is directly informed by its natural surroundings. Black Cockatoos noisily feed on the seeds of Banksia and Casuarinas and low-lying Tea-tree and Moonah dance with on-shore breezes, all set on the backdrop of the vast Bass Strait.
Understanding this spectacular natural landscape and the unique effect that colour and light play in this environment was a key starting point for the restoration of the Clubhouse.
From the selection of timber grain, to the custom designed carpets and rich greens that follow you throughout the Clubhouse, our palette draws directly from nature, creating a seamlessness between the indoor and surrounding landscape.

“There’s an undeniably romantic appeal to this 100 year old rambling Clubhouse, perched on the dunes, and our first priority was to design an interior that lived up to that first impression.”
Director Sonia Simpfendorfer reflects on our approach to the restoration of the Barwon Heads Golf Club, a landmark rich with history and coastal atmosphere and requiring a design response grounded in respect, sensitivity and vision.
Reinterpreting an Arts & Crafts legacy, revealing a refined narrative shaped by craftsmanship and using honest materiality has resulted in an enduring Clubhouse grounded in place.
Across three levels, we introduced a graded interior strategy – balancing preservation with evolution, and strengthening the building’s role as a relaxed, welcoming sanctuary for its community.
“Just the word Clubhouse holds a promise of something that is not ordinary or everyday – the interior needed to be unique, a world apart, something immersive and unique.”

On behalf of the philanthropic initiative People Places, and the inimitable Dr Helen Sykes we are pleased to announce the winner of the inaugural People Places Prize 2025!
Congratulations to Damian Madigan whose Bluefield Housing research project has directly informed government policy and generated new pathways for equitable housing delivery. The jury stated Bluefield Housing as “...an outstanding contribution to the future of Australian urban environments, demonstrating exceptional impact, clarity, and scalability.”

Congratulations are also given to Jessie French from Other Matter for a Commendation. "Transforming the home for the evolving contemporary needs of the client, whilst adhering to requirements set out by compliance restrictions and paying homage to the building's original features was no mean feat. The reimagined interiors with warm timbers and tones that reference the Blue Mountains of New south Wales, Australia now create a setting that intuitively caters to and nourishes the homeowners spirit, epitomising the studios' shared vision and generous, fruitful partnership."
