Can a pivot door work on an existing opening, or does it need to be built for one?

This is the question we get asked most after someone's seen a flush, frameless entry online and wants it in their own home.

The honest answer: it depends on what's already there. Pivot hardware needs a minimum door thickness of around 40mm and a solid fixing point at the floor and head, standard 35mm hollow core doors generally fall short of that and need to be swapped out, not just re-hinged. Retrofitting is possible once we know what's behind the existing frame and floor.

It's not right for every opening, and we'll tell you that upfront rather than finding out halfway through installation.

Heat control & natural light. Privacy & an open room. Blocking the sun & keeping the view.

Most Sydney homeowners think these are trade-offs, pick one, live with the other.

They're not trade-offs. They're just two different jobs.

October is when external shading starts booking out.

By the time the first properly hot week hits in November, the homeowners calling us are the ones who already have curtains closed through summer last year and said "not again." The ones who act now are the ones with fix screens installed before Christmas.

Fixscreens hold their own in wind where a straight drop blind won't, and they seal at the edges instead of flapping loose. Coupled, they can span openings up to 7m, so most outdoor areas aren't off the table. They're still not the right fit for every opening though. If you want full clear-glass views with zero visible track, they're not the quiet option.

If your outdoor space turns into a furnace every afternoon, send us a photo of your space. We'll tell you what would actually work, and what we'd steer you away from, before the install calendar fills up.

If your living room gets harsh afternoon sun, you've probably already tried the usual fix: close the blinds, lose the room.

Most sheer fabrics either let too much glare through or block the view entirely. There's not much in between.

Silhouette Shadings work differently. Soft S-shaped fabric vanes float between two sheer panels, and instead of just filtering light, they bounce it up onto the ceiling. The room stays bright, but the glare's gone.

Tilt the vanes open and you get daytime privacy with the view still intact. Close them and you get full privacy with UV protection, which matters if you've got floorboards or furniture fading in that same west-facing light.

Here's the honest part: room-darkening fabric still isn't a blackout solution. If you need a room fully dark during the day, this isn't the product for that space, and we'll tell you that upfront.

For living areas where you want light without the squint, this is the one we reach for first.

Send us a photo of your space. We'll tell you what would actually work, and what we'd steer you away from.

A client wanted the look. No visible hinges, no door stop, the door just swings like it's floating.

What they'd specced was a standard 35mm hollow-core internal door.

The Pivotica Pro we use mortises into the door itself. No hardware on the face, nothing at the jamb. That's what makes the look work. But the mechanism needs somewhere to actually sit, and a hollow-core door at 35mm doesn't have the material to hold it. The Pro 100 needs a minimum door thickness of 40mm, the Pro 150 needs 50mm, to seat properly and carry the load.

This isn't a styling fix. It's a door order problem. If a pivot hinge is going on the plan, the door itself has to be specified as solid core at the right thickness before it's made, not after it arrives on site and someone realises the hinge has nowhere to go.

Once you've got the right door, the Pro 100 is rated 40-100kg and the Pro 150 is rated 40-150kg, concealed completely, holding position at 90 degrees without the sag a hinged door on a heavy leaf eventually gets.

If you're planning a flush or pivot door for a renovation or new build, send us the door spec before it's ordered. We'll tell you if the hardware will actually work with it, and what needs to change if it won't.

Commercial fit-outs come with a different brief to residential work.

This project was a design studio head office: concrete and stone finishes, high ceilings, and a brief that needed fabric to do double duty, softening the acoustics of a hard-surfaced space while holding its own visually against the architecture.

We specified JD Cavalier in Blush for the scale and the acoustic weight it adds against all that concrete. On a wall this size, the wrong fabric either disappears or fights the room. This one does neither.

If you're specifying for a commercial space and need something that solves a problem beyond "looks nice", send us the brief and we'll tell you what would actually work, and what we'd steer you away from.

West-facing penthouse. Full bay views. Afternoon sun hitting the balcony from around 1pm.

The outdoor deck at the Port Hacking Penthouse was effectively off-limits for half the day - and the heat coming through the western exposure was affecting the inside of the apartment too. A generous outdoor space with one of the better views in the area, sitting unused because the conditions made it unusable.

The brief was to make it work in all conditions. Sun, wind, rain, and the coastal exposure that comes with a waterfront site.

Three coupled Renson Camargue louvred roofs across the balcony, fully enclosed with integrated Renson Fixscreens. The louvres manage light and airflow through the day. The screens handle wind, western sun and rain. Integrated lighting and heating extend the space well into the evening.

The structural challenge was the more interesting problem. The building’s waterproof floor membrane meant drilling down to bolt the structure wasn’t an option - standard installation wasn’t possible without risking the membrane. The solution was custom-engineered heavy-duty brackets that secured the entire structure to the structural walls instead of the floor. The membrane stayed untouched. The installed system is wind rated to 160 km/h.

The result is a space the homeowners now use daily - and apparently the reason they decided to stay in the property rather than move on.

The Peninsula House faces west, which gave the owners incredible evening light. It also meant the home copped the full force of low-angle afternoon sun every single day, right as they wanted to be using the space.

By the time the sun started dropping, the ground-floor alfresco and the windows facing the pool were hard to sit in. Heat gain, glare, and that squinting-through-sunglasses-inside feeling.

Shade sails or a single external blind wouldn't have covered it. The problem spanned two conditions: large glazed windows needing a screen that could handle direct sun load, and a pool-facing area where the owners didn't want the view permanently obstructed. We specified Renson Fixscreens across the main windows, alfresco, and the pool-facing side.

Worth knowing: External Venetians have their place when you want adjustable blades for angling light through the day. But the blades are only part of the system. The full housing and frame stay in place even when the blades are open, so the structure never fully disappears from the sightline. For this pool wall, that wasn't going to work. The owners wanted a completely uninterrupted view of the water when the screen wasn't in use, and with Fixscreens, the system retracts fully away so there's nothing left in their eyeline.

Send us a photo of your space. We'll tell you what would actually work, and what we'd steer you away from.

Most outdoor areas only work on a good day.

Too hot by 3pm in January. Too windy to sit out in spring. Packed up after the first cool night in May. So the furniture sits there and everyone ends up back inside.

The outdoor areas that actually get used are built differently. They're rooms, not covers.

That's what Amani is: an outdoor pavilion, not just a roof.

Overhead, rotating blades you open for sun and airflow, angle for shade, and close when the rain comes in. Around it are the parts that make it a room: side screens, glass panels, fixed or folding walls, integrated heating, lighting in the blades, and outdoor curtains. Each one is specified to the space, the orientation, and how you actually live out there.

A single module goes up to 4.5 metres wide and 7 metres deep, and modules can be coupled to cover larger areas. It still won't suit every site. Very tight terraces or spaces with structural constraints can rule it out, and we'd tell you that up front.

We've brought Amani into the Abesco range because it's the first outdoor system we've seen that matches the finish we hold everything else to.

Send us a photo of your outdoor area and tell us how you want to use it. We'll tell you whether an Amani pavilion suits the space, or what we'd suggest instead.

Full details at the link in bio, or comment AMANI and we'll send them straight to your inbox.

Curtains read differently at scale.

In a standard room, a curtain is a window covering. In a room with high ceilings or large glazing, it becomes something closer to an architectural element - it defines the space, adds acoustic weight, and changes how the room feels from the moment you walk in.

Floor to ceiling fabric on a 3.5 metre wall does something a roller blind can't. The volume, the movement, the way it catches light - it shifts a room from functional to considered without changing the structure at all.

It's not right for every large space. A room that needs to feel open and minimal can be overwhelmed by heavy drapery. And where heat or glare is the primary problem, fabric alone usually isn't enough - a roller blind behind the curtain handles that better.

Every home is different. The ceiling height, the glazing proportions, the existing finishes and how the space gets used all change what we'd specify.

Send us a photo of the space. We'll tell you whether curtains are the right direction - and if they are, what we'd recommend for the scale you're working with.
