Those cloudy white marks on your shower screen? They're not permanent. Here's how to fix them with something you've almost certainly already got at home.

Hard water stains are the number one complaint we hear about shower screens. They're not damaged, they're just calcium and mineral deposits left behind when water evaporates, and they build up until the glass looks frosted or cloudy. The good news is white vinegar dissolves them completely.

Here's the fix:

1. Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle. For heavy build-up, skip the dilution and go straight white vinegar.

2. Spray generously and leave it to sit for 5–10 minutes. For really stubborn spots, soak a cloth in undiluted vinegar, press it against the glass, and leave it for 20–30 minutes.

3. Scrub gently with a non-scratch sponge or microfibre cloth using circular motions. Never use steel wool or abrasive pads, they leave micro-scratches that permanently dull the glass.

4. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and dry with a clean microfibre cloth straight away to prevent new water spots forming immediately.

One thing to watch: don't use vinegar on natural stone tiles or marble nearby. The acid will etch the surface. It's safe on glass and most chrome, but rinse your fittings well afterwards.

If the stains still won't shift after a few attempts, they may have bonded deeply into the glass over the years. At that point, give us a call, we'll be honest about whether a professional clean will fix it or whether a new screen is the smarter investment.

Standard single-pane window glass is 4mm thick. Double-glazed windows use two 4mm panes with a gap of 12–16mm between them. Toughened safety glass (the kind we use in shower screens and glass doors) is typically 6mm, 8mm, or 10mm.
