Linoleum was invented by accident in 1855. A forgotten tin of paint, an oxidised skin of linseed oil, and an inventor who didn't throw it away.

The recipe Frederick Walton eventually arrived at- linseed oil, wood flour, pine rosin has barely changed in 170 years.

What did change was the colour. The natural, unpigmented palette of the raw materials got buried under a century of pattern and pigment.

Marmoleum is made from up to 98% natural materials and is certified climate positive (carbon negative) from cradle to gate - without offsetting.

Manufactured from natural raw materials, including renewable plant-based materials such as linseed oil, wood flour, jute, and natural rosin, which makes Marmoleum unique as it has a CO₂ uptake in the product itself. The photosynthesis process of all plants used in Marmoleum absorbs more CO₂ than is emitted by the raw material transport and production processing of the end product.

The raw materials, coupled with an efficient facility powered by renewable electricity, mean that Marmoleum actually achieves a carbon negative footprint at the production stage!

A school that tells a story from the ground up. 🏫

North Melbourne Primary School Campus, designed by ARM Architecture, is a six-storey vertical campus.

ARM Architecture chose Marmoleum Marbled as the primary floor covering across all levels. The brief demanded durability for busy circulation areas, sustainability credentials for a healthy learning environment, and a colour range extensive enough to give each level its own distinct identity.

Each building level represents a layer of Wurundjeri Country, culture and language, developed in deep collaboration with N'arweet Dr Carolyn Briggs AM, a senior Boonwurrung Elder and former pupil of the school herself. The ground floor is the 'Emu's Egg'. The third floor references the 'Land' in earthy tones. The fourth level becomes the 'Sky' in vivid blue.
