The walls are down, and the plan I drew months ago is finally taking shape on site.

On my current North Shore downsizer project, walls have come down and are being rebuilt in a better location. I completed the spatial design for this home some time ago, so to stand in the space now and watch the rooms open up exactly as intended is enormously satisfying. Moving a wall on a plan is one thing. Seeing it happen, and knowing the home will work so much better as a result, is another thing entirely. What looks great on paper might not translate – or might be absolutely perfect.

The joinery tells a similar story. It was designed months ago, and now that the walls are in and the real room sizes are visible, we are refining the details to suit the space as it actually is. This is where careful planning and a willingness to adjust meet. Good design is not set in stone. It responds to what the space reveals as the build progresses.

For anyone downsizing, this is the part that matters most. A smaller home has to earn every square metre, and getting the layout and the storage right from the outset is what makes it feel considered rather than compromised. The care taken early is exactly what you feel later, on the day you move in and everything settles into place.
