📜 ১৭৭৮ সালে, ব্রিটিশ টাইপোগ্রাফার চার্লস উইলকিন্স ও পঞ্চানন কর্মকার মিলে তৈরি করেন প্রথম বাংলা ফন্ট, যা ব্যবহার করা হয় “A Grammar of the Bengal Language” বই মুদ্রণের জন্য। এই বইটি লিখেছিলেন নাথানিয়েল ব্র্যাসি হ্যালহেড।
(In 1778, British typographer Charles Wilkins and Panchanan Karmakar designed the very first Bangla font to print “A Grammar of the Bengal Language”—a book written by Nathaniel Brassey Halhed.)
🖨️ এই টাইপফেসটি ছিল হাতে তৈরি মেটাল টাইপ, যা ব্যবহৃত হয়েছিল ফোর্ট উইলিয়াম প্রেস, কলকাতায়। প্রতিটি অক্ষর হাতে খোদাই করে তৈরি করা হয়, যেখানে প্রেরণা ছিল হাতে লেখা বাংলা লিপি, তবে ছাপার উপযোগে তা সরলীকৃত করা হয়।
(This typeface was handcrafted for movable metal type, used at the Fort William Press in Kolkata. Every letter was carved manually, inspired by handwritten Bangla but simplified for printing.)
🎯 কেন এটি তৈরি হয়েছিল?
ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানির কর্মকর্তাদের বাংলা শেখানোর জন্য একটি গ্রামার বই প্রয়োজন ছিল। তাই তারা একটি ফন্ট তৈরি করে ছাপিয়েছিল প্রথম বাংলা ব্যাকরণ বই।
(Why was it made?
The British East India Company needed to teach Bengali to its officers. So, they created a font and printed the first Bangla grammar book!)
👉 এই ফন্টে ছিল সীমিত যুক্তাক্ষর ও লিগেচার, কিন্তু এটাই ছিল বাংলা মুদ্রণ ও টাইপোগ্রাফির একটি বিপ্লবের সূচনা।
(This font had limited conjuncts and ligatures, but it was the beginning of a revolution in Bangla printing and typography.)
