We all know Belgium has its problems: The bureaucracy, the taxes, the weather... So why do so many Belgians still choose to stay?

In Part 1, I asked people in Wallonia what keeps them here:

And this time, I’m asking Flemish Belgians why they choose to stay.

I hope you enjoy!

Which Belgian expression did I miss?

Drop it in the comments, because I’m sure you guys are going to give me another 50.
À tantôt !

“On met la patate!”

What they’re saying literally translates to go go potato. But it means so much more here in Belgium. This is one of the 13 weird phrases you should know if you’re going to live here.

And a huge thank you to everyone who sent in their suggestions over on Instagram. A lot of the expressions in this video came directly from you!

And don’t worry if you live in Flanders — I already released the Flemish version of this video which you can find linked below Because apparently there are just as many strange expressions in Dutch.

Allons y!

Spend a Sunday with me at Midi Market

Full video on YouTube: Alexandra Templeton (link in bio)

One of the coolest things about the Midi Market is the range of ingredients you can find. There are stalls dedicated to products you might otherwise have to seek out at specialty shops, particularly when it comes to Mediterranean, North African and Middle Eastern cooking.

You’ll find things like fresh mint and cilantro, different types of peppers, zucchini, dates, dried fruits, nuts, spices and preserved foods. It’s also a great place to stock up on larger quantities, whether you’re cooking for a big family or simply like to have a well-stocked kitchen.

And if you enjoy cooking, it’s a good excuse to try something new without having to make a special trip across Brussels to find it.

Xoxo,
Alexandra

Every Sunday, one of Brussels’ biggest markets takes over the streets around Gare du Midi, with hundreds of stalls selling everything from fresh produce to cheese, flowers and street food. Today I am showing you around, pointing out where to find good deals, and trying some of the delicious street food.

“Met de deur in huis vallen.”
Literally, that means to fall through the door into the house. But here in Belgium, it means getting straight to the point. Which is exactly what I’m going to do, because this is one of 12 weird expressions that you should know if you’re going to live in Belgium.

And a huge thank you to everyone who sent in their suggestions over on Instagram. A lot of the expressions in this video came directly from you.

I hope you enjoy!
