As you know I'm a member of the Fraser Valley Woodturners Guild. We have monthly Presidents Challenges to push us to try to things or perfect things we know. Our Presidents Challenge for April was “eggs”, and I thought I’d give myself an extra challenge and try resin, and not only resin, but put a rose in it and see if I could turn it. The rose I chose was from a bunch given to me by Rick on my birthday in December. I tend to dry most of my roses, but also try to dry them in a certain stage of opening. Once the resin was poured and was curing, the rose took on some of the moisture and “plumped” out to look more like a fresh rose. An unexpected surprise was the bubbles that landed on the edges of the petals to make it look like dew drops. The bubbles naturally occur in a resin pour, and are usually taken out by way of a heat gun or torch. I was afraid if I used that I would melt the mold - so I didn’t! Happy result! I made a figured maple stand for it and figured, why not make the stand able to hold something - like maybe a ring or bracelet? Hmmm - what could one do with that 🙂 Turning resin is a messy, messy project but I’m looking forward to doing more .
