Most people see framing. I see the finished room.

That is where renovation decisions can either come together beautifully — or become expensive to correct later.

Lighting rough-ins may look harmless when the ceiling is open, but once the millwork, hood, sconces, cabinetry and sightlines are in place, those locations matter.

Interior design is not decoration at the end.

It is part of the construction conversation before decisions become expensive to change.

The best renovation results happen when the designer and builder are working from the same finished vision.

Apparently I ruin beautiful rooms for myself.

Most people walk into a room and notice the chandelier, the marble, the fireplace, the view, or the furniture.

I notice those things too.

But then my brain starts looking at the details most people feel before they know how to name them.

Different light temperatures.
Fixtures that are too bright.
Lighting that feels cold in one area and warm in another.
A room that should feel beautiful, but somehow feels a little awkward.

Lighting is one of those details that can quietly change the way a space feels.

The goal is not always more light.

The goal is the right light.

And that is one of the reasons clients hire a designer before the details are locked in.

A kitchen can be 250 square feet and still feel frustrating to use.

Many homeowners assume they need more space when the real issue is often how the space is planned.

Common problems we see include:

Not enough functional storage
Counter space in the wrong locations
Poor appliance placement
Inefficient circulation
Too many steps between everyday tasks

Thoughtful reconfiguration can dramatically improve how a kitchen feels and functions without necessarily adding square footage.

The goal isn't simply a bigger kitchen.

The goal is a kitchen that works better for the way you cook, entertain and live.

Most people notice the wallpaper.

I notice the lighting.

In this powder room, the original fixture was too bright, too cool, and flattened the entire room.

The wallpaper wasn't the problem.

The millwork wasn't the problem.

The room simply wasn't being lit the way it deserved to be.

Lighting does more than help you see.

It influences how a room feels.

That's one of the reasons lighting is a priority when I design a renovation. Small decisions that work together create spaces that feel comfortable, inviting, and intentional.

Most homeowners focus on finishes.

Cabinet colour.
Countertops.
Lighting.
Hardware.

Those decisions matter.

But the difference between a kitchen that simply looks beautiful and one that genuinely works every day often comes down to the decisions you don't immediately see.

Where do oils live when you're cooking?

Where do utensils go?

Where does a heavy appliance get stored so it doesn't permanently occupy valuable counter space?

Good design isn't just about creating a beautiful room.

It's about understanding how your family actually lives and building the space around that reality.

The most successful kitchens are rarely accidental.

They're thoughtfully planned.

Will a curbless shower still make sense in 20 years?

The best renovations aren't designed only for today.

A curbless shower creates a clean, seamless aesthetic while also making the space more comfortable and adaptable as life changes over time.

Good design isn't just about how a space looks when it's finished.

It's about creating a home that continues to work beautifully for years to come.

The most valuable design decisions are often the ones that become more appreciated with time.

Most people think designers are hired to choose finishes.

In reality, many of the decisions that shape how a home feels happen long before paint colours, countertops, or furniture are selected.

Lighting is one of them.

As I've gotten older, I've noticed that I need more light than I used to. But that doesn't mean I want a room flooded with bright light from every direction.

Good lighting isn't about more light.

It's about the right light.

It's one of the first things I notice when I walk into a room and one of the ways I design spaces for my clients.

Because when lighting is thoughtfully layered, a home can feel welcoming, comfortable, functional, and beautiful all at the same time.

Design decisions like these often go unnoticed.

But they change the way a home feels every day.

Why do some beautiful homes still feel frustrating to live in?

Most homeowners assume they need more square footage.

Often, the real issue is how the home functions.

Poor storage.
Awkward circulation.
Disconnected spaces.
Entertaining areas that don't support the way people actually gather.

The most successful renovations don't just make a home look better.

They solve problems you feel every day.

Thoughtful planning can make a home feel larger, more functional, and easier to live in without adding a single square foot.

One of the biggest challenges homeowners face during a renovation is visualizing the finished result.

Selecting tile, plumbing fixtures, lighting, and finishes is one thing. Understanding how those decisions will come together in a completed renovation is another.

For this primary ensuite renovation, we used technology to help the client visualize a proposed direction and make confident renovation decisions. This process allows clients to explore options, evaluate design decisions, and move forward with greater confidence.

Thoughtful renovations are about more than selecting materials. They are about creating spaces that function better, feel better, and support how people live every day.
