Ch’iyaqtel Shxweli.

For Lori -
Sp’oq’es representing the overall power and prestige but more importantly respect. Lori is a person that is very respected by our community and from what I have seen is very respectful in return. In the body is the Shxweli, the spirit and life force, the center of all. Going out to the legs are the Sth’oqwi. The salmon, the food source and way of life. The tail is made up of Spáth the black bear. Our brother, guardian and protector. The wings come out to a point representing more of what you would see in a weaving design as well as the spikes and sticks leading the way into the fish weir.

charcoal and graphite drawing on wood with spray painted cedar boughs.

Rundle Rams
Thanks to AD Rundle Middle School Sarah, Chris, Lisa, and Amanda for the opportunity and for the hospitality.

It wasn’t without its challenges but it was a fun project where I pretty much had free range to create. I chose to utilize the blues and greys of the schools colours while incorporating tan/brown to complement the wood tones within the school.

Entrance wall
Ram transforms to human and welcome all into the school with two Ram heads below and some Coast Salish Designs up the sides.

Principal’s office wall
A giant eagle’s eye to help watch over the school.

Hallway wall
Two Rams on the outside.
Spindle Whorl design in the middle with the Human transforming into a Ram and a frog.
I chose to create a transformative entity because being in middle school is a transformative period in your lives. A time when you transform mentally as well as physically.
The Ram represents the Strength and physical change and the Frog represents internal and physiological changes. The frog or pípehóm specifically symbolizes Honesty.

pípehóm = lexwsthe’ít
frog = honesty
E’éwé kw’as mets’elqéylem qew qwíqwelatstexw.
Never lie or gossip.

Be honest with yourself and others
Teli ta’ th’á:le kw’es qwál.
Speak from the heart.

Be true to your word.

Ye smímeyáth qas te pespésk’a - butterflies and hummingbirds ❤️
Thanks to Chilliwack Community Services for the opportunity and thanks for your patience on this one. I had a lot of fun. Although not the same building I couldn’t help but think about all the good times I had at the Paramount when I was a kid. 🙌
