A client asked us if we could produce copies of finials for a family heirloom. The story of the 'whatnot' shelf is that it has been in his mother's family for over 150 years, maybe 200. It was one of the few 'finer' pieces of furniture in the family 'farm house', on a dairy farm in East Clifton, QC. This is a very small rural settlement in the 'Eastern Townships', settled by United Empire Loyalists in the late 1700s and early 1800s, with most of them of 'English and Scottish descent and coming from the Massachusetts and New Hampshire colonies in what became the USA.
It was used in his great, great-grandparents farmhouse and passed down to his mother when he was about 16. He inherited it when his father passed in 1995. It moved all over Canada and the USA with him in my many moves, and survived three kids, two divorces, storage units and crappy moving companies, but lost a few finials and incurred some minor damages along the way. That's where Lil Red Roof Rustics came in! We were able to replicate the three missing finials using a cloning tool we created just for this job. The last two pictures show the finials (with the finish applied by the clients) in place on the whatnot shelf.
