Happy Monday!!
I love watching the farmers harvest the fields! We stopped to watch them the other day. It reminds me of when I was a kid and we went to my gramma’s so my dad could help my grampa and uncle harvest. My mom and gramma and I would take lunch out to the field. They’d have hot coffee in a thermos, water and something simple like sandwiches on my gramma’s homemade bread and cookies. Then once we ate lunch, we’d head back home while the men headed back out to the field. Often my brothers would come back with us because they spent all morning in the grain truck or on the combine. Then we would prepare supper for the next few hours… “something hearty because they’d been working all day and the men would be hungry,” my gramma would say. My gramma would get me to peel vegetables and maybe even chop them. Supper would be roast beef and mashed potatoes, gravy, bread, vegetables and homemade canned fruit for dessert. Sometimes they’d come in to eat around 6pm and head back out and sometimes at 11pm, depending upon how much they wanted to get done before dark. Of course they didn’t have the elaborate tractors and combines like today, but it got the job done all the same.
I enjoyed those harvesting days at my grandparents!
