MMeng Ceramics I am an artist currently focused on ceramic sculpture. I like painting and sewing too. I do live in the bush off-grid in the Northwest Territories.

I also change it up a lot which is good for creativity but bad for social media. Context is everything.

We made wood fire kiln Pelee Quarry and did a bisque fire yesterday. It needs some adjustments but it’ll get hot for sure. I don’t know exactly what temperature my clay melts at yet but I’m looking forward to getting more and more knowledgeable about kiln designs and the clay/temper we’re working with. It fires to the same colour as the clay I use in the NWT but the properties are different. It’s a lot stronger for starters. I played around with ear test tiles I want to try glazing some of these testers with magnetite sand.

I’m out here on Pelee Island in Lake Erie processing clay. I’ve been told by Patricia from that this “Toledo clay”, which is Lake Erie lake bed clay is a decent quality. In the archeological record, people were using magnetite sand as a temper, so I’m going to do some tests with it. This clay is extra soggy so it’ll probably need lots of temper. It’s also heavier (and equally plastic) than the clay I’ve been working with in the NWT, which seems promising. We’re also building a little hard brick kiln to test low wood-fire ceramics.

The Toledo is ocre coloured, and it’s about 2 feet below a grey clay that I’ll experiment with too. This process still feels magical, especially when you first find it. It’s like following some ineffable string of creation.

I’ve been here lurking and slowly working away at stuff. I finally mounted and crated this piece. It’s bound for Brampton and then Haliburton and then Mississauga. Instagram chose that track for me and it works so well I feel bad for Tom Waits.

Also there’s shots of other peoples art in my photos, ‘s painting and ‘s ceramic sea shell. The exhibition is curated by for the Henry Goodman Exhibition for Emerging Artists.

I had meant to post these leg and foot lamp photos more than a month ago, before they went up for . I’ll tag here too, to show how I ended up finishing the pieces I started in Medicine Hat. If any ceramic artists are considering applying, I would like to absolutely hype Medalta for having such an amazing residency experience, and how helpful and were to me, especially being really pregnant at the time. I had a baby since then, I’m not totally sure if posting baby pictures online is a good idea? But there’s a photo dump.

It’s legs! I’m finishing my project before I leave in residence. Let’s see how many make it through firing. I’m really hoping they’re translucent after firing.

I finally managed to successfully slip cast with polar ice (I wasn’t sure 1/2 way through). It has no plasticity and stuck to the molds the first few casts. I think I somehow seasoned my molds with smaller clay particles and now it’s releasing okay. It’s thin enough to be translucent to make the legs into lamps.

I’m seeing an odd community standard in Medicine Hat where people are clearing snow with leaf blowers and I can’t get over this.

My bust made it through bisque! was not so lucky. And thanks to Dee for helping us load the kiln.
