College for Interior Decorating: Material Boards

This is my first material board, although I haven't exactly submitted it to my professor yet, it will be soon.

The space I have in mind is a kitchen, my dream kitchen. If I'm to live this life, my space will be professionally designed by me.

There are many choices in this board, but what I had in mind while creating this was black granite countertops, soft, medium dark, wooden cabinets with intricate handles. Glossy tile for backsplash, orange stripe curtains over the sink, nickel hardware, a dark, forest green rug below the sink. Grey vinyl, an alternative choice of black, marble patterned laminate, and many different paint options. The paint can be from a soft, sage green, to a bright, red-orange, to an earthy tan.

To tie this board together, and to prove it is being used for a kitchen, I added a small wooden spoon on top of the granite sample. I also added a piece of notebook paper to simulate a custom cookbook.

Sketches for a cat friendly shelf/bed end. Building my furniture with my cat in mind. This is my creative process.

It's an open box, two platforms inside. The middle platform is fluffy for a comfortable sleeping spot when my cat, Frodo, is not playing. I watched him play with the space in my room he had, and was amazed to watch him use three levels, the floor, the chair, and the table. So I put it all in one piece of furniture and drew it out.

If you have cats, you definitely know that without a cat tree or house for your cat to jump and climb on, your human furniture will be destroyed eventually. When you can't let your cat outside, build a home for them.

Modern bohemian - virtually decorated.

One of my favourite styles of decor is bohemian, I loved the use of colour and natural decor in my inspiration photos, so I replicated that in this pre-built house in a video game.

Something about interior decorating is that it is different from interior design. I prefer the aesthetic and functional side of things, rather than the technical. An interior designer is allowed to touch the walls, decorators don't have that much freedom.

Being a decorator means utilizing the space given to create a functional, aesthetically pleasing space. How does the space work and how is it used? How does the space make one feel?

To me, this space is being used for daily life. I want to prioritize the space that I don't use and make sure one would be able to walk from room to room. If I could live here, I wouldn't hesitate. These spaces make me feel warm and cozy, there's a space to sit and read a book in every corner, but there's also places to put away books and trinkets near those sitting areas.

This project in this game is only around half done, these photos are of the entire first floor and the second floor bathroom.

From seeing this awesome bedside table for sale in BC, to picking the colours, to painting and customizing it by hand. I took a classic IKEA bedside table and made it custom to me. I found patterned, peel and stick vinyl at Michael's for the glass. I'm very happy with how it turned out, I believe I'm on step closer to having my perfect bedroom, I'm also one step closer to becoming an experienced, professional designer.

I am not a fan of plain black and white styles. I love colour, its one of my favourite parts of decorating: matching and contrasting colours. While I can appreciate modern black and white decorations, I think a pop of colour ties things together.
