Here's a slice of studio life: there is a cycle to studio maintenance tasks. When one gets down all the to-do list, one goes back to the top task on the list and starts over 🤣

One such task that comes back is straining glazes through a fine mesh sieve. With time, glazes sitting in buckets eventually start forming clumps and interfere with a even application... and even application gives even results. Who does not want that?

In an ideal world, glazes should be strained every 6-8 weeks. The reality is that we're doing our levelled-best to do it every 10-12 weeks. 🤷‍♀️

Is out little studio going on you? We sure are making roots in the Pembroke / Petawawa community of creatives.

This year is our 6th year in business and we've been growing every year since launching in 2020 and it makes us feel so many emotions!

We're proud of the the road travelled so far. The Studio started in MJ's house with 2 students per class. Now we can host classes of up to 10 students and support a membership of over 50 creatives.

We're extremely grateful for the returning community of Clay Nighters, Students, Members and Storefront customers. Without you, we'd be nothing.

We're excited for the future as we continue to think about projects and skills to teach, new products to develop, new glazes to tests, and so much more.

Attaching handles is painstaking work and while the algorithm prefers to offer short video, this is a real time clip of MJ putting a handle on a butter dish lid.

Nothing is done quickly in the pottery studio, even after over a decade of practice. Attaching a handle is only one of many steps in the making of a butter dish.

Safety first!

Working with wet clay is safe, but some tasks require handling dry materials - and dry clay is harmful. It is mandatory to wear personal protection equipment when working with dry raw materials such as clay, feldspar, flint, frits, and colouring oxides.

Whenever we're mixing glaze raw materials, we wear a respirator with particle filters to ensure no free silica can enter the airway.

We're in full production mode these days. Winter's been very busy with classes and teaching and now is all about replenishing the store.

Our first production step consists of making slabs of clay using the slab roller. This tool is key to producing well compressed slab of even thickness.

We start with a full block of clay and we pass it through the slab roller several times to bring it to a half-inch thick clay pancake.

Even with the slab roller, this is a physical workout. Who needs to go to the gym? Not potters. The Studio is the gym 🤣
