Some days remind you why you started all this.

Yesterday was one of those days.

We spent much of the day at High Point exploring Science in Design, including a session on how art can influence health and the way we experience our surroundings.

One thing really stuck with both of us. Research suggests that even nature inspired artwork can offer some of the restorative benefits we associate with being outdoors. Think about the benefit for a small room without a window. We’re considering that very question now for the Daniel Island project.

And then we met Zsuzsi Winn Studio | Hand Painted Designs & Fine Art/High Point. I absolutely loved meeting her! Her work is inspired by nature, but what we loved even more was hearing how she thinks about creating it. As an artist, she starts with the feeling not just how it looks. She literally speaks our language. And as we got to talking, we realized we had much more in common. Our newfound obsession with birds, our shared love of Budapest, and the experience of making life pivots the second phase of life.

We believe a beautiful home should do more than look beautiful. The idea for Kensington Design House was inspired by the people living in the homes, their stories, their memories, how they want to live and how they want to feel.

Yesterday was truly a reminder of why we so deeply believe in what we’ve built.

Not much daylight or a view? You can still bring a feeling of nature into the room.
But what does bringing in nature actually mean if botanical prints and a room full of plants aren’t your style? That was part of our thinking for the Daniel Island project, mainly due to space.
With less views to the outdoors, we wanted the kitchen to feel calm, inviting and connected to nature. The milky glass pendants complement the accessible beige cabinets, softening the cabinetry’s lines. At night, the subtle movement of the glass reminds me of the moon. I love that. This is one way to apply biophilic design through forms and textures that evoke nature.
For us, choosing a light starts with how we want the space to feel. What in your space feels dark or missing something?

We talk a lot about designing for the visible and less visible parts of a home.

At the Daniel Island project, that means thinking beyond finishes and furniture to things like prospect + refuge, visual rest, lighting, privacy, circulation and connection to nature.

Sometimes the conditions we notice least are the ones most shaping our experiences.

As we near completion of the project, we’ll be sharing more of the ideas.

Our Home Environment Study helps identify what's shaping that feeling, so we can design for it.

This week, between 1 Million Cups and the Whealth event, we’ve had so many wonderful conversations about how our homes affect the way we feel. We’ve been incredibly encouraged by the response. One subject people keep leaning into is lighting.

Light does more than shape a room. It helps shape the rhythm of our day.

Circadian lighting works with the body, bringing brighter light during the day and warmer, softer light in the evening. A home should not feel the same at 7 AM as it does at 9 PM.

This is one way the built environment can actively support our well-being.

Today Kensington Design House officially opens its doors.

You’ve heard a little about what we’re building. Today, we wanted you to meet us.

KDH grew out of the way Rich and I have always looked at home from different perspectives, and what happens when these perspectives come together.

We’re so excited to share with you.

Thank you to Callie Cranford (Webster) for helping us tell our story and to Morrison Millwork for giving us such a beautiful place to do it.

Ending a chapter and beginning a new one. I came to Bali to determine how I want to soak up the next chapter. The entrance to the villa immediately put me in the headspace to truly settle into myself and my truth. Less than a week from the launch of Kensington Design House and the setting only reinforced what we’re building. The villa created the foundation for me to fully embrace the women, the community and experiences that made Self Connect Retreats | Bali so impactful. More to come!

This week has been all about momentum.

With Elizabeth in Bali and the official launch of Kensington Design House getting closer, there’s been no shortage of work happening behind the scenes — while the Daniel Island project continues to move forward.

One of the pieces I’m most excited about is the KDH Home Environment Study. We’re building it to look beyond how a home looks and begin asking a more important question: How well is your home actually supporting the people who live in it?

The study will evaluate the home through the lens of health, wellness, comfort and overall quality of the living environment — and ultimately help us make better, more intentional design decisions.

Before we officially roll it out, we’re looking for a small group of people who would like to participate in our pilot Home Environment Studies.
