I hope I started filming earlier to show the more dramatic change from no shadows to shadows – but I hope this shows how painting simple shadows that you see in the reference photos can help make your paintings pop even if you don't focus too much on details.

As someone who relies on reference photos for my paintings, I sometimes feel like my illustrations look too ordinary compared to artists who are very good at creating from imagination. I'm slowly trying to find ways to add more personality to my work by experimenting with different styles. Lately, I've been drawn to adding shine and sparkle to my paintings to make my subjects look a little less mundane.

In reality, the process was much much slower than this timelapse video butI really enjoyed this part of painting the White Rabbit candies. 🐰 I'm using gouache paint on a hot pressed paper plus this really awesome $1 detail brush 👌🏻

Are you Team Plastic is Edible or Team No I'm Not Eating the Plastic? 😅

I remember debating with friends whether we should eat the "plastic wrapping" around the White Rabbit chewy candy. It looks like plastic, even tastes kinda like plastic but then it actually melts in your mouth. A pretty awkward experience but the milky candy actually tastes good! And the pretty packaging is just made for painting. So of course, it's now part of my new gouache painting collection.

Currently working on a new collection that features subjects from my Asian and Filipino heritage – so this gouache painting is of a popular brand of crackers called Skyflakes.

This was something I grew up eating as a snack or something to tide me over if a full meal wasn't available yet. I would also eat it when I wasn't feeling well and couldn't keep any food down. I love its plain but slightly salty flavor and I haven't found a replacement that's as good. Luckily, from where I am, it's available in Asian grocery stores.

Today's painting is another memory from childhood – Yakult! As a kid, I remember asking my mom or grandpa to buy me a pack from the Yakult lady (with her Yakult sunvisor and vest) every time she passed by our street. She would carry them in an insulated styrofoam container so it was still cold when you take a sip – perfect for those hot summer afternoons in the Philippines.

My toxic artist trait is buying hundreds of different watercolor and gouache colors only to start painting with the five basic colors of acrylic paint. 😭 But I'm enjoying this experience so far! I've always wanted this style of painting on a canvas but couldn't make it happen with the mediums that I've been using on paper.

I painted here a childhood Filipino treat called Choc Nut. I used to buy it from sari-sari stores (small neighborhood shops) as a kid. I'm so happy that even after moving overseas, I can still buy it from the Asian grocery. What's your favorite childhood treat?

Now that I'm done swatching all my gansai tambi Japanese Colorama series, it's time to paint! I first tried the yellow palette to quickly paint a sunset scene. 🌅

I'm a gouache painter so I loved how opaque the gansai tambi paints looked after just one coat while also allowing me to smoothly blend the paints. Unlike my regular watercolors, I didn't have problems with watermarks even if I used a bit of water to blend the colors. I can't to paint more with the other palettes!

This is my most exciting unboxing yet! 🦞🍊🥫 Finally, I'm unboxing my own products instead of others' this time. 🥺 As I prepare to open my online shop, I've been testing out different prototypes of the merch I want to create based on my favorite paintings. So far, I'm loving the keychains, prints, and stickers I've received. And I hope you'll all love them too once they're out!

Last gansai tambi palette from their Japanese Colorama collection – the blues! 💙🐟

March has been a busy month for Studio Handog – worked on launching a redesigned website (visit studiohandog.com please), an illustration commission, a public art submission, plus a business pitch (that I won third place in!).

Fourth palette from 's Japanese Colorama collection features juicy, citrus yellows. 🍊🍋 The colors here make for a perfect sunset painting (I did one and will share soon!) 🌅
