A room can feel light and airy and still have plenty of personality. I love the contrast of the bold black lighting and beam against the softer furnishings, warm wood, and patterned drapery. It’s a beautiful mix of strong lines and easy, natural textures.

Matera: a place where thousands of years of human history can be seen in one remarkable landscape.

These natural caves across the Gravina show where Matera’s story began - in prehistoric times.

What began as natural shelter gradually grew into an entire city carved from and built upon the stone.

One of the most fascinating things about Matera is that you can barely tell where the natural rock ends and the architecture begins.

Entire families, large families, lived in these compact cave homes, using the same space for sleeping, cooking, eating and storage.

Unbelievably families also shared their homes with mules, horses and other livestock. They were essential to their livelihood and even helped keep them warm in the winter.

Rainwater was directed through channels into cisterns beneath the homes. The opening in the kitchen provided access to the water below while the naturally cool caves were also used for food and household storage.

Over the centuries, Matera became home to churches and monasteries. The stonework and vaulted ceilings were incredible.

By the 1950s, conditions in the overcrowded sassi had become so unhealthy that residents were relocated and the area abandoned. Later restoration began and Matera became a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1993.

If Matera looks familiar to you maybe because it was selected for its authentic appearance to Jerusalem in Mel Gibson’s Passion of Christ or more recently in the James Bond No Time to Die - a famous scene right here in Piazza San Giovanni Battista.

Andrea Roggi’s sculptures are displayed are displayed throughout Matera - so appropriate in a city shaped by humanity’s relationship with the land since the beginning of time. Beautiful while at the same time haunting and completely unforgettable ❤️
