Ricardo didn’t lack ideas.

He had Pinterest boards full of them.

What he needed was a way to turn all those individual things he liked into a room that actually felt like his.

He’d moved into a new home in Airdrie with furniture that was heavy, dark and better suited to the house he’d left behind. This one needed to work for entertaining, family celebrations and ordinary evenings at home.

The dining room began with a carob-stained trestle table that seats six day to day but extends to ten when everyone comes over.

Rather than buying the matching chair set, we used tufted turquoise chairs and re-covered the backs of the host chairs in an embroidered Robert Allen fabric so they read as their own pair. A large painted landscape nods to Ricardo’s love of the ocean.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, it’s a useful reminder:
A dining room has to work for the big dinners—and the ordinary Tuesdays when nobody is coming over.

Good furnishing isn’t about filling a room. It’s about giving the way you live somewhere to happen.

What’s one room in your home that works beautifully for company—but not nearly as well on an ordinary Tuesday?

These are the photographs that rarely make it onto social channels.

The tile is in, the shower glass is still going up, the vanity is open and the plumbing is showing. The closet shelving is built and waiting to be filled.

But the decisions that matter are already there.

Our client wanted an ensuite that would support the way she planned to live for years to come, so we reworked the layout within the existing footprint, widened the openings and designed a barrier-free shower.

The brass grab bars in the shower and beside the toilet weren’t additions made at the end. They were part of the plan from the beginning.

Swipe to the last slide for the finished room featured in Style at Home.
This is what designing for the years ahead looks like before the styling.

If you’re planning a bathroom renovation, save this as a reminder that the most important decisions are often the ones you’ll never see in the finished photograph.

Picture a Tuesday afternoon in this Bragg Creek home, where an easel sits at the end of a large hallway, positioned to make the most of the natural light.

There was room for it, the light was right, and the homeowners saw an opportunity to turn an otherwise overlooked space into something personal. Just down the same hallway is a beautiful custom pantry, complete with a beverage fridge, space for small appliances and plenty of thoughtful storage, tucked behind two sets of double doors with cremone bolts.
And while this may look like a sprawling family home, the homeowners were actually right-sizing. As newer empty nesters, they built a home around how they wanted to live now, with space that feels intentional rather than simply adding square footage for the sake of it.

A Forever Home isn't about having more rooms. It's about creating the right spaces for the life you're living.

Four teenage and young-adult daughters mean this great room needs to hold a crowd on a Tuesday and still feel calm on a Sunday. The fireplace wall is being redesigned with a textured tile surround and an arched mirror, flanked by built-in shelving on either side.

Through the archway, an underused dining room most families would leave alone is becoming a music room instead, room enough for an upright piano and a chair to sit in while someone practices.

This photo is a design rendering which served as a preview of where the plan was headed. A Forever Home grows with the family living in it, and a dining room becoming a living room is exactly that kind of growth.

If your own main floor has a room nobody uses anymore, book a Discovery Call through the link in our bio and let's find out what it could become instead.

The rooms aren't the only spaces that shape how a home feels.

Hallways, entries and the spaces that connect one room to another are often treated as an afterthought. In this Bragg Creek European Farmhouse, they were considered as part of the whole.

The long brick wall gave us an opportunity to create a moment rather than simply a passageway. An antique trestle table, old apple baskets, family photographs and iron lighting add layers that feel collected rather than newly installed — very much in keeping with the character of the home.

It’s a small part of a much larger project, but that’s the point. When the architecture, interiors and details are considered together, there shouldn’t be a point where the design simply stops.

Even the in-between spaces deserve a plan, because a Forever Home doesn't have any afterthought rooms.

A leaky shower is what got Luis and Annabel to call us. Four daughters, one very busy household, and a primary ensuite that wasn't keeping up with any of it.

The design keeps their existing vanity cabinetry and floor plan, because not everything needed to go, and reimagines the rest around it: herringbone tile climbing the lower wall, white fan tile above, and an arched niche in Capel Blue that nods to the home's Spanish Revival roots without shouting about it. A frameless glass shower and freestanding tub anchor the room, and a handheld unit on a bar plus humidity-sensing ventilation quietly handle the parts of daily life nobody photographs.

This one was a design rendering rather than a finished photo, a preview of where the plan was headed. A Forever Home ensuite should still make sense in twenty years, not just look good in the renderings. If your own ensuite is overdue for its own fresh start, book a Discovery Call through the link in our bio.

Walk to the end of this Varsity Estates closet and a soft white chandelier is waiting for you, the kind of fixture you'd expect in a bedroom, not tucked away behind a door where only the homeowners ever see it. That's the whole point. A room nobody else walks through still deserves to feel finished.

Custom shelving runs floor to ceiling on both sides, LED strip lighting built into the edges so nothing gets lost in a shadow at seven in the morning. Open shelves hold what gets reached for daily, closed drawers handle the rest, and a marble-look floor keeps the whole space feeling like an extension of the bedroom rather than an afterthought bolted onto it.

A closet is one of the few rooms in a home built entirely around one family's habits, which is exactly the kind of thinking a Forever Home is built on. If yours doesn't fit yours anymore, let's talk. Book a Discovery Call through the link in our bio.

Martin and Connie spent 14 years of their marriage living in different cities before retiring and moving across the country together to be near family and the mountains. Their new home needed to work for both of them from day one, right down to the guest bathroom in the basement.

A dated tub enclosure came out in favour of a custom tile shower with a tall, narrow niche in deep grey-blue Saltillo tile, set against clean white subway walls. The same idea repeats underfoot in a larger hexagon floor tile, keeping the palette simple while still giving the room something to look at. In-floor heat went in for the guests who'll actually feel the difference.

A guest bathroom deserves the same care as the rooms everyone sees, because a Forever Home doesn't have a room that gets skipped. Book a Discovery Call through the link in our bio and let's talk about yours.

Step into this Canmore kitchen and the ceiling gets you first: warm tongue-and-groove planking running the length of the room, the kind of detail a full renovation could easily have paved over in the name of starting fresh. It stayed exactly where it was. Everything else was built to work around it.

Rather than treating the ceiling as something we simply had to accommodate, we made it a feature—continuing the same wood onto a custom range hood we designed for the space.

Light-toned cabinetry runs the full U of the room, with brushed gold hardware catching the light from the window over the sink. A hall closet that used to be dead space is now a proper wall pantry with pocket doors, so the counters stay clear for the everyday business of baking bread and setting out apples in a bowl.

The goal wasn’t simply to preserve what was already here. It was to create a kitchen John and Linda could continue living in—and loving—through their retirement years, without stripping away the details that made this family cottage theirs.

That’s the idea behind a Forever Home: make it work beautifully for the life ahead while keeping what still feels like home.

The plan for this Canmore renovation involved moving the kitchen wall, until we found out the structure wouldn’t let us. A slab foundation and structural walls stacked straight through the house turned an ambitious idea into one that didn’t make financial sense for our clients.

So the kitchen stayed within its original footprint, and we made it work considerably harder. Elsewhere, reclaiming the storage nook next to the primary ensuite gave us room for a proper vanity for two and a dedicated toileting area where an old tub used to be. The new shower has both a rainhead and a handheld unit, with space for a bench if it’s ever needed. Every extra inch of storage now disappears behind the wall, where nobody has to look at it.

That’s what a Forever Home renovation actually looks like: not always the plan you started with, but the one that makes sense for the house, the budget and the years ahead.

We wrote the whole story, wall and all, on the blog today. Link in bio.
