Curvature
40 x 30 in. | Acrylic & watercolour pencil on canvas

My first completed painting since the residency at Château d’Orquevaux.

The château’s landscape was exquisitely ordered and carefully for. Returning home, I found I could see the wildness around me more clearly: the chaotic splendour of early fall along our dirt road. That colour and feeling is where this painting, and my newest work, begins.

My handling of the paint has changed too. I’m working more intentionally with the surface tension of water now, allowing more watercolour-like blooms. The result is gentler, less graphic, a little more chaotic, like the Ontario landscapes I love.

I’m keeping Curvature with me while this body of work develops. To be notified when new paintings become available, join my collectors list via the link in my bio.

Playing—that’s my plan for this residency at the gorgeous Chateau d’Orquevaux France.

No worries about consistency, coherence, just trying all the things, moving quickly, being experimental and open to whatever catches my eye. Bliss.

Oh, and living in a chateau is rather delightful. And my fellow artists are a fascinating bunch.

Morning in the forest.

The dappled light, decay and growth, the soft carpet of last year’s leaves and pine needles—it’s a treat for the senses.

It inspires me to begin anew.

Did you ever play Red Light, Green Light? On my street a group of us used to play. And my old cat Rimsky loved that game—and was better at it than any of us.

This painting is called Green Light. It’s about permission to move forward, taking a chance. The light is bright, the world is strange and wonderful. Go for it.

Zoom in to see the flash of bright green near the centre. 💚

Spent a couple of days experimenting on Dura-lar (a type of plastic film like Mylar). Tried out a monochromatic palette, all reds in this one—and threw in some real gold too.

Experimentation keeps my energy up and gives me a chance to try out things that may appear in larger work.

Spring is so welcome. Went out for my first bike ride this morning to soak up the sights. I love an old fence, blossoms (not lots up here) and a good lens flare.

I’ll take this experience into the studio and see where it takes me.

Painting can be hard work, but this part of the job never feels tough.

I’m still buzzing from our opening last night. The room was packed, the energy was incredible. (I was too busy meeting people to take photos—but I’ve been sharing other people’s on my stories.)

I couldn’t be happier with the curation, how .bee found new relationships between my pieces, as well as with the work of the other artists.

Heartfelt thanks to for giving our show a home. Visit their Insta for opening night photos.

Paint is incredible stuff. Each pigment from synthetic reds to earthy ochres behaves a little differently. They even dry differently, and fall out of solution at different rates.

Today I was struck by the beauty of the takeout containers, pie trays, and lids I use to mix colour. Which one’s your favourite?
