In support of a permanent Indigenous store!
Luke and I are passionate and relentless when it comes to supporting Indigenous artists. We envision a world where all native artists can financially sustain themselves from their artwork and ideas, have access to workshops to learn new skills and be given fair opportunities to showcase their work to the world. Almost every native person we know - whether they are lawyers, councillors or teachers - are all artists at heart. We all have a calling to go back to our traditional art forms, host tables at pow wows and be recognized for the important, innate, cultural work we do with our hands.
With the support we’ve received from organizing Indigenous Art Markets for 5 years, we decided to try out running a store and opened a temporary, 2 month pop up. A little over a month into Kalihwiyo, we recognize how deeply our community needs a permanent Indigenous art space.
Our vision for Kalihwiyo was to create an Indigenous store that featured the incredible range of work made by Indigenous artists, to help show that Indigenous art can be modern, muted, funny, and different than what people think it should be. We wanted it to be a space where we can support both up-and-coming artists and established small Indigenous businesses.
Kalihwiyo currently supports 32 Indigenous vendors from all over Canada with unique items including beadwork, jewelry, books, art prints, blankets, paintings, paint supplies, stickers and more. We are now looking to move into a permanent space in Kitchener!
We’d love your support - starting a brick and mortar (in this economy????) is no small feat. Our hope is to expand our art collection and brands, open a small coffee bar and curate a beautiful selection of beading and art supplies for artists.
