Never pick a paint colour without doing this first 👀

I’ll be honest, I was absolutely influenced by what I saw on social media and Pinterest. Natural Cream by Benjamin Moore was everywhere, it looked stunning in every inspo pic, and our community even voted for it in a previous post!

But I knew I had to test it in our actual space first. And I am so glad I did!

Natural light direction changes everything. Our kitchen is north facing, which means cooler, indirect light all day.

That kind of light pulls undertones out of a paint colour that you would never see on a chip or a screen.

So I grabbed 4 Benjamin Moore sample cans, painted them on poster boards, and hung them up in the space.

Best $60 decision ever 😂
The difference was immediately obvious.

And yes, flooring, wall colour, and lighting all affect how paint reads too. But when you’re building a new home, cabinet decisions need to be made before any of those elements are even in place. So sometimes all you can rely on is your natural light and your samples.

And in our space?

Pale Oak turned out to be the perfect greige tone we were after🤍

Which colour would you have chosen? Drop it below 👇

JOY over algorithms. Always 🤍
Behind this page is just US!

A middle-aged couple building a home from hand-drawn sketches, combining my husband’s building skills with my love for design, decor, and creating something that feels intentional for this phase of our lives 🤍

That’s why we started sharing. And honestly? It still is.

From our little corner of the internet, somewhere along the way I’ve watched social media shift. Suddenly everything has become about algorithms, growth, and “making it.” The pressure to perform can creep in quietly! I started to feel it too!

But here’s what I keep coming back to: joy creates better content than pressure ever will!

So I am not sharing for numbers or recognition, I clearly haven’t cracked that code anyway 😆
I’m sharing because this project, the creativity, the design, all of it genuinely brings me joy ☺️

And I think that’s reason enough!

If what we share resonates with YOU, maybe you’re our kind of people 🤍

And if not? That’s okay too.
You do you boo! 👻

Most feature walls stop at the fireplace 🔥

We wanted ours to BE the room. 🤍

So we designed a fully custom built-in feature wall that feels like it was always meant to be there: arched niches, curved details, layered textures, and storage that disappears into the design. The kind of wall that makes you stop when you walk in.

Here’s exactly how we built it:

✨ 6-foot stone fireplace surround as the anchor
✨ Arched built-in niches flanking each side
✨ Custom curved mantel (no sharp edges)
✨ Floating driftwood-stained maple shelves
✨ 42” built-in cabinetry for completely hidden storage
✨ Soft layered lighting for warmth and depth
✨ Full symmetry for that calm, balanced feel
✨ Warm neutrals, because trends fade, timeless doesn’t

Now the real debate: the cabinetry finish 👀

🤎 Driftwood stain
🤍 Natural Cream paint by Benjamin Moore

Drop your vote below… we’re genuinely torn ⬇️

Save this for your future dream home inspo ✨
And share it with someone who would absolutely obsess over these built-ins 👀

🎉 We received Facebook’s “Emerging Talent” badge” this week ☺️🤍

Truthfully, we never started this page chasing recognition or numbers.

The Dubo Project began simply as a way to document our downsizing journey and the process of building our dream home from the ground up… while sharing the experience with others who love home design, decor, and the reality of building.

It’s become a place where my husband (the experienced builder 🔨) and me (the wannabe designer/interior decorator 😂) get to share our ideas, decisions, delays, wins, frustrations, and everything in between.

So to receive recognition for creating content people genuinely enjoy following along with feels really special 🤍

Thank you for being here, for cheering us on, and for being part of this journey with us.

And honestly… we’re just getting started 🫶
