It’s been a busy start to the week as we get ready for another year at Scattered Seeds Craft Market!

It’s hard to believe we’re already at this time of year again (but like, for real). Our studio’s been a bit of a flurry these past few days as we work away, getting everything ready (we’re bringing some fun stuff).

We’ve been taking part in Scattered Seeds for years now, and in many ways, it’s always felt like the unofficial kickoff to autumn market season and the beginning of all things holiday. It’s become a bit of a tradition for us, and one we really look forward to each season.

We’ve met so many great folks through the market, made some fun connections and had the chance to introduce Farmer’s Son Co. to people who might not have otherwise found their way to our studio & shoppe.

We’re looking forward to another weekend of familiar faces, new introductions and sharing a little bit of what we’ve been working on in the studio. We hope you’ll swing by to say hello!

A little something fun from Nelson, British Columbia! 🇨🇦

We’ve just received a fresh shipment from Schoki Chocolate , an independent Canadian chocolatier with a thoughtful approach to ingredients, flavour and the art of crafting bean to bar chocolates.

As Schoki’s exclusive Winnipeg retail partner, we’re really happy to have their 70% Dark Chocolate with Sea Salt back on our shelves. This might not be the most glamorous photo I’ve ever shared from the studio, but it’s a pretty honest one.

We’ve spent the past few days trying to get our stock room under control. Holiday & cozy season treasures are arriving, shelves are being reorganized, and I’ve been trying to make room for everything that’s coming.

And then I found this.

A tote filled with old Farmer’s Son Co. labels that I’ve been holding onto for the past year and a half.

Every time I came across it, I told myself to keep it. Maybe we’d craft those candles again. Maybe I’d find a supplier for the tumblers we once used. Maybe I’d be able to find all the fragrance notes we needed. Maybe everything would fall back into place.

There was always a maybe.

But somewhere along the way, while I was waiting to see if we’d go back, our studio kept moving forward.

Rory and I reformulated, reworked and figured things out as we went. New fragrances took the place of old ones. New ideas became more interesting than the ones I was trying so hard to hold onto.

And looking at this tote again, I realized we’re just not that studio anymore.

There’s money sitting in here. Artwork doesn’t come cheap. There are scent stories I loved, ideas I was proud of and pieces of Farmer’s Son Co. that were important to getting us here.

I could try to recreate some of them. I could probably get close.

But I don’t want to spend the next chapter trying to recreate the last one.

I’d rather craft something new. Something that shows you how far we’ve come. How we’ve evolved. What we’ve learnt.

I think that’s part of running a small business in Canada right now. You’re constantly looking at what your business once was, what it is today and where you’re going to take it next. Some changes you choose. Others you simply have to figure out as you go.

Sometimes you don’t realize how far you’ve moved forward until you find something you’ve been holding onto from before.

So, after a year and a half of maybe someday, I’m finally ready to empty the tote.

That version of Farmer’s Son Co. got us here.

So we keep going.

Harvest is one of those fragrances that started with a core childhood memory.

When I was young, my family rented a bit of land from my great-uncles Mort, including his rolling fields up around Merridale (iykyk), northeast of where I grew-up in Roblin (Manitoba’s Parkland region if you’re not from around these parts). I spent so much time out there during harvest, bouncing across those fields with my mom in our old Ford grain truck behind the old red Massey combine that purred along.

I remember being in grade one and learning how to read in that truck; books in hand as we bounced across the fields. I remember the dust hanging in the air, watching the grain pour into the back of the truck, the colours of the fields, geese calling overhead and that chill that would settle in as the days got shorter.

So much of what autumn feels like to me comes from those early memories.

That’s really where Harvest came from.

When I sat down to create this fragrance, I wanted to capture that particular time of year rather than something traditionally “fall.” Warm honey, ginger and dried citrus give way to spice, cedar, amber and a little smoked earth.

It’s the warmth of harvest, the changing fields and cooler air. And somehow, all these years later, it can still take me right back to being a kid in that grain truck.

The Farmer’s Son Co. shoppe will be closed this Wednesday, September 30th in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

September 30th is a day to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, survivors, their families and communities. It's also a day to acknowledge the ongoing impacts of the residential school system on First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, and our responsibility to listen, learn and engage with this history.

We encourage our clients and community to spend some time today learning from Indigenous voices and organizations. A few places to begin:
