Why Do Flooring Samples Look Different in Your Home?

Ever brought a flooring sample home and thought it looked completely different? You’re not imagining it!

There are 2 main reasons this happens:
#1 Your lighting: Natural light, warm bulbs, and cool LEDs can all affect how a flooring colour looks.

#2 Your surroundings: Wall colours, furniture, and décor can change how the flooring appears.

That’s why we recommend taking samples home before making your final decision.

Did you know you can sign out flooring samples from our showroom? Take your favourites home to see how they look in your own space, throughout the day and in different lighting.

Why Underlayment for Your Floors Matters

When choosing new flooring, most people focus on colour and style, but the underlayment underneath plays a big role in how your floor performs, feels, and sounds.

What is underlayment?
It’s the layer between your subfloor and your flooring that helps with comfort, sound, moisture protection, and overall performance.

Best underlayment by flooring type:
Hardwood Flooring
❗️Use will depend on installation method (nail vs. glue. vs. floating)
• Silicone or wax paper (reduces friction with the subfloor)

Luxury Vinyl (LVP/LVT)
❗️All the LVP/LVT we sell comes with an attached underlay, adding extra will cause issues with the locking systems and void warranties.
• Vapour/moisture barrier (for damp subfloors)

Laminate Flooring
• Combo underlayment with foam pad and vapour/moisture barrier (absorbs sound, improves comfort underfoot)

Tile Flooring
• Uncoupling membranes (helps prevent tiles and grout from cracking)
• Waterproofing membrane (stops moisture spreading, helps prevent mold/mildew)

Carpet
• Foam or rubber underpad (prolongs carpet’s lifespan, improves comfort underfoot)

A great floor starts from the bottom up. Choosing the correct underlay will make a huge difference in the long-term performance of your floor.

Have questions about your project? We’re always happy to help!

Floor Care Tips: Skip the Vinegar and Wax!

One of the most common mistakes we see is homeowners using vinegar or wax-based products to clean their floors.

While vinegar is often promoted as a natural cleaner, its acidity can dull or damage the protective finish on many hardwood, laminate, and luxury vinyl floors over time.

Wax-based products can also create buildup that leaves floors looking cloudy, attracts dirt, and may make future maintenance more difficult.

Instead:
🧹Sweep or vacuum regularly.
🫧Clean with a manufacturer-recommended floor-specific cleaner.
💧Use a damp microfiber mop, NOT a soaking wet one.
🧽Wipe up all spills promptly.

The right cleaning products can help keep your floors looking beautiful for years to come!

Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant Flooring: What’s The Difference?

With spring melt and rain in Ontario, moisture can become a real issue. This is when the difference between waterproof and water-resistant flooring actually matters.

Water-Resistant Flooring:
✅handles minor spills
✅good for living areas and bedrooms (low-moisture areas)
❌will swell if water sits on it for too long

Waterproof Flooring:
✅handles any spills, pet accidents, and standing water
✅good for basements, bathrooms and foyers (high-moisture areas)
✅no swelling from water, meaning more protection long-term

These differences will determine whether your floor holds up. Come see us at Wye River Flooring and we can help you find what will work best for you!
