MA

Last night, exhibition MA opened at Gallery.

Through Japanese paper, artist’s books, and porcelain, drawing unfolds as a trace, a gesture of memory and a search for the space in between.

The exhibition is on view until 17 June.

I will be at the gallery on Monday and Tuesday from 16:00–20:00, and during the weekend by appointment.

For eight days, I was simply an artist.

For the first time in a long while, I found myself alone with my work again, fully immersed in an artistic environment, surrounded by people who speak the same language, even when they come from different parts of the world.

The eight days I spent in Japan marked my first independent artist residency in more than thirteen years.

In a way, the experience brought me back to myself while moving me forward at the same time, something I did not know was possible.

What I often seek through my work, a kind of artistic Esperanto, a space where people connect beyond geography, culture, and language, became a lived experience during those days of intense work, conversations, and encounters.

The impressions are still settling. They continue to unfold and have already found their way into MA, the exhibition that grew out of this experience.

It was an experience I had hoped for for a long time, yet one that exceeded anything I could have imagined.

Yesterday marked the closing day of Luminous and Uncanny Cities in Belgrade, but it feels more like the beginning of a new journey.

For weeks, these cities lived among people, carrying different emotions, memories, and reflections with each encounter.

Thank you for welcoming them and giving them a space to breathe.

What touched me most was seeing how many people found fragments of themselves inside these works.

I like to think that everyone carried a little light home, while the darkness remained on the canvas.

As Ivo Andrić wrote:
“Without darkness, there is no dawn.”

And now the cities continue their journey beyond the exhibition walls.

Today is Đurđevdan.
Exactly 34 years ago, on this day, I fled Tuzla with my grandmother and sister — to Belgrade.

Many years later, this exhibition somehow brought together all of my cities. Tuzla, Belgrade, Macerata, Rome, Athens, Istanbul, Ankara, Zurich…

And I realized that if I had never left Tuzla, neither this exhibition nor these cities within me would exist in this form.

Luminous and Uncanny Cities is about those inner cities, about layers of memory, departures, returns, and the light we carry through time.

I realized all the republics of former Yugoslavia were there,
through my people. 🙏🏻
