Houby in the Czech Republic – today's haul! Some of these mushrooms went straight into smaženice (scrambled eggs with mushrooms), and I will dry the rest for later. Dried mushrooms are perfect for Christmas kuba or a hearty bowl of bramboračka (potato soup).

This is how cooking was done in many Czech village cottages back in the 1800s: with one big whitewashed oven (pec) dominating the room. Bread, soup, Sunday roast, and in winter the whole family gathered around it because it was the warmest spot in the house.
And those white cloths hanging above it? My grandmother did the same thing with noodle dough. Thin sheets rolled out, hung up by the oven to dry a little, then cut into fine noodles for soup or into little squares called fleky.
Anyone else's grandma hang her noodles like laundry? 😊
