Tracey Emin says she had her first retrospective too young. I feel I pigeon-holed her work when she was young. Her emblematic ‘unmade bed’ felt shocking (it was supposed to be) but hollow. Now amongst this intimate collection of letters, photographs, paintings, sculptures and embroidery it all makes sense. At times it is still shocking (it’s supposed to be) but also gentle. The embroidered blankets act as canvases but also comforters. The quilts with quiet statements that shout so loudly if only anyone was prepared to hear. In amongst the random statements the heart wrenching I said no is plain and clear. As you move through the years her return to painting with blood red in all its scarlet, cadmium, hues clearly reference her bodily functions and operations. This resonates with every single woman who walks through the show. We have all had some experience of many of the themes her work explores. Her bravery in putting it all out there for all to see is humbling. She feels she has been taken advantage of all her life so it’s a nice caveat that as you leave through her dedicated gift shop all the products from tea cups to magnets means she has turned the table and is now exploiting our desire to have a piece of her but this time she is fully in control. Brava chica, brava.

How wonderful to see my work amongst such highly respected artists such as Christiaan Lieverse, Hiroomi Ito, Peter Reuterberg and Miquel Aparici . I love how from a wide angle REFLECT reflects on the black marble ‘sculpture lake’. Come to the gallery at the Mandarin Oriental hotel on Paseo de Gracia on Wednesday 3rd of December for this months opening and performance by Ivan Puñal starting at 7pm! See you then for a glass of 🥂!
