On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 took off from LaGuardia at 3:25 p.m. — a routine afternoon flight to Charlotte.
Ninety seconds later, the plane flew into a flock of Canada geese. Both engines went silent.
Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger — a 57-year-old former Air Force fighter pilot with nearly 20,000 hours in the air — took the controls. His co-pilot, Jeff Skiles, worked frantically through the engine restart checklist.
Air traffic control offered LaGuardia. Too far. Teterboro? "We can't do it," Sully replied. Then, calmly: "We're gonna be in the Hudson."
Three and a half minutes after the bird strike, the Airbus A320 touched down on the freezing river. The tail cracked. Water poured in. But the plane stayed afloat.
Flight attendants Sheila Dail, Donna Dent, and Doreen Welsh led passengers through emergency exits — onto wings, into rafts, into the 41°F water. Ferries and rescue boats swarmed in within minutes.
When the last passenger was off, Sully walked the cabin. Then walked it again. Only when he was certain no one remained did he step off the sinking aircraft.
All 155 people survived.
The "Miracle on the Hudson" wasn't luck. It was thousands of hours of training, a crew that functioned flawlessly under impossible pressure, and a city that showed up when strangers needed saving.
