Monty the Penguin - This winter we're pleased to see the humble penguin making a foray into home accessories. We were first alerted to this trend thanks to John Lewis with the adorable Monty the Penguin Christmas advert who were first to spot the little creature’s style potential. And now we're all slightly obsessed. Oh and they totally rock the monochrome trend too!

Christmas look: Dramatic Black & Gold - Want glamour for all your seasonal entertaining? Then add a touch of dramatic black alongside gold decorations and you’ll have an atmosphere that’s Christmassy and party perfect. Once again, you needn’t begin again if you don’t want to – instead use existing rich golds from your Christmas decoration collection as the basis of your seasonal look.

Add to these baubles and other decorations in black as well as black and gold, and don’t forget that glitter finishes are pretty much compulsory – it is Christmas after all. Keep the scheme going by dressing tables and mantels with tea light holders in gold, and work your existing home accessories in, too, if they have a golden sparkle. Vases, mirror frames and even the cushions on your sofa can continue the theme.

Don’t forget the fairy lights, whether for the tree, mantelpiece or a window display with equal impact from outside and in. Make sure you choose a set with a warm white light, though – multi-coloured strings are a no-no here.

Christmas look: Nordic Nature - For a rustic effect featuring traditional seasonal colour, choose this Scandinavian-inspired theme for your festive decorating. It combines a large splash of Christmas red with neutral tones and naturally inspired accessories, creating an ambience that’s cheery and welcoming.

Go for a real tree – or an artificial version that can definitely pass as the real thing – and dress it with baubles in red and white patterns, as well as traditional decorations. We’re talking stars, hearts, bundles of cinnamon sticks, mini stockings, candy canes and so on. Search out simple materials as well – felt, wood, tin and plain ceramics are ideal.

When it comes to creating your festive tablesettings, opt for red and white runners or red placemats against a wooden table, tealights in unfussy clear or red glass jars and plain white tableware. To add detail, pine cones, wooden reindeer and glass lanterns will all create fabulous finishing touches.

Christmas look: Snowy white: If you love a truly magical finish in your home at Christmas, evoke the sparkle of ice and snow for your tree, your mantel and the entranceway. A real Christmas tree is the perfect choice, but if you want an extra layer of frost, go for a convincing lookalike with a silvered finish.

Dressing whichever tree you’ve chosen is easy: as well as baubles in sparkling white finishes, add in glass decorations in clear and mercuried finishes. When you aren’t creating contrast with your colour palette, you’ll get the prettiest effect by marking difference in other ways. Pick baubles in different shapes, putting together round and teardrop outlines, and mix textures with both smooth and faceted designs.

For your table setting, keep the snowy effect going with a white linen cloth and white crackers, and use classic Christmas foliage to create a centrepiece for your spread. Wreaths, too, look best made from ivy, while a sprig of mistletoe suits the scheme a treat.

DIY Christmas Bunting:

You will need
-A variety of fabrics
-Pins
- 2 x Tape/Ribbon

1. Create a triangular template and use this to cut out two triangles for each flag you wish to make (this will depend how long you want your bunting to be).

2. Sew the matching pieces together (with the seams on the inside) and turn the right way out. Iron each flag flat.

3. Pin each triangle along your tape or ribbon. Then place the second piece of ribbon on top and pin together. Sew along the ribbon to hold all the triangles in place.

DIY Christmas Decorations: Pucker Up
Encourage seasonal smooches with this no-fuss kissing ball. Wrap a 4-inch polystyrene ball in a 14-inch fabric square; secure with a rubber band. Thread the end of 54-inch of ribbon down through the band, around the ball, and up through the band's other side so ribbon ends match up (knot them to hang the ball). Wrap 14 inches of ribbon around the other side of ball (crossing first ribbon, as shown); tuck ends into band. Hide band with a shimmery bow and festive sprigs.
