PSD Completed Projects | Changhua: A Harmonious Symphony of Architecture and Context
In approaching the design of these terraced houses, our primary objective was to explore how individual "identity" can be established within a repetitive sequence, while maintaining a respectful dialogue with the local streetscape.
The Art of Proportion: Deep-set Vertical Windows and Shadow Play
Diverging from the conventional horizontal apertures typical of local townhouses, we have adopted a vertically elongated proportion for the floor-to-ceiling glazing. Coupled with minimalist wall adornments, this creates a striking rhythm of crisp lines and deep-set recesses. As the sun moves across the facade, the shifting shadows lend the building a dynamic, sculptural quality throughout the day.
Contemporary Lexicon Meets Local Heritage
The material palette prioritises locally sourced elements, predominantly featuring traditional wall tiles and pebble-dash finishes—staples of Taiwanese residential architecture. By utilising kiln-fired tiles in a multi-tonal mix of beige, grey, and brown, we have achieved a tactile warmth. This palette is a deliberate nod to the historic "red-brick" urban fabric of nearby Lukang, ensuring the contemporary structure feels deeply rooted in its environment.
Architectural Cadence: A Collective Symphony
While the terrace maintains a cohesive massing, subtle variations in texture, colour, and parapet details provide a clear demarcation for each residence. Much like a symphony, each unit acts as an individual movement—distinct in detail, yet coexisting in perfect harmony under a shared architectural language.
Urban Skylines and Breathing Spaces
The fourth-floor setbacks to the front and rear serve as private sanctuaries for residents, offering a tranquil outdoor retreat. Architecturally, these setbacks alleviate the visual massing at street level, creating a more airy atmosphere for pedestrians. The varied rooftop configurations delineate a sophisticated skyline, returning the act of living to a more sensory and comfortable experience.
This project is more than just a residence; it is a refined realisation of PSD’s vision for contemporary Taiwanese living.
